This will probably be the most hauntingly delicious black bean soup you’ve ever tasted. The coffee adds a slightly toasty, woodsy background note. The optional ham hock adds smoky, salty ham flavor.   • 1 Tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 Tsp Cumin
  • 1 Tsp Smoked hot paprika
  • 6 Cups Low sodium chicken broth
  • 2 cans Black beans
  • 1 can Diced tomatoes
  • 1-2 Smoked chicken or turkey sausage ; Chopped
  • 1 medium Finely chopped onions
  • 3 Celery ribs ; Finely diced
  • 4 medium Red bell pepper ; Diced


In a heavy pot over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Add the bell peppers, celery and onion and sauté until the onion is tender, 5 to 6 minutes.

Add the sausage and sauté until browned, about 2 minutes.

Add the cumin and paprika and stir for 1 minute.

Add the 4 cups broth, the black beans and the tomatoes with their juices.

Bring the soup to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer to blend the flavors, at least 20 minutes or up to 45 minutes, thinning with water or more broth as desired.

Season the soup with salt and pepper. Ladle into warmed bowls and serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Cook and stir bacon, onion, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper in hot oil until the onion is caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  2. Stir garlic, chipotle pepper, and cumin into the bacon mixture; cook until the garlic is fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Pour black beans and chicken broth into the pot; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until the beans are tender, about 30 minutes.
  3. Mash some of the beans with a potato masher until the soup reaches your desired consistency.
