Your science based guide to doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss

Welcome to my science based guide to doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.

Read this guide all the way through and you'll know exactly what kind of weight loss results you can expect to get from the cabbage soup diet.

More importantly, you'll understand exactly where that lost weight came from (aka, how much body fat you can actually lose).

Before we dive in, here's a short overview of what's covered in this guide:

How much weight will you lose on the cabbage soup diet?

Before you ask yourself how much weight you will lose on the cabbage soup diet, you should ask yourself where that lost weight will come from.

Will you actually target your body fat? Or will you only lose some water weight, or worse, destroy some of your muscle mass?

(If you think that this can't be a big problem, then take a look at my extreme weight loss experiment, where I've proven that it's possible to lose almost 20 pounds in just 24 hours, only to gain all that weight back in less than two days!)

So let's take a closer look at some of the reasons why the cabbage soup diet seems to work so incredibly fast.

How does the cabbage soup diet work (and why it works so well)?

The cabbage soup diet is a low-sodium diet, meaning you could lose a lot of sodium-bound water weight, especially if you're currently eating a high-sodium diet.

(If you're interested in finding out how much weight a low-sodium diets can help you lose, you can read my guide on sodium/salt and weight loss, where I personally demonstrate how much extra water weight you could be holding on to because of sodium.)

The cabbage soup diet is based on an awesome idea of using low calorie foods to provide a good feeling of fullness and satisfaction while still keeping your calorie intake extremely low.

But because you will eat so little calories, you'll also end up losing a lot of water weight that's currently bound to something called "glycogen".

Glycogen is simply how our bodies store energy, and as soon as you go on some low-calorie diet, your body will start wiping out those glycogen energy reserves.

But just because you'll be losing a lot of glycogen-bound or sodium-bound water weight, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll actually be losing any of that stubborn body fat.

How much body fat will you lose on the cabbage soup diet?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you won't be losing any body fat on the cabbage soup diet.

I'm just saying you'll probably lose way less body fat than what the number on your bathroom scale might suggest.

While your final fat loss results will depend on how much soup you actually eat, you will probably end up eating anywhere between 500-1000 calories per day.

At that many calories per day, you can consider yourself lucky if you managed to lose 3 pounds of pure body fat per week. A more realistic number would be up to 2 pounds of body fat per week.

Let's take a look at some of the benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.

The major benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss

The single biggest benefit of the cabbage soup diet is the fact that there's no set limit on how much cabbage soup you're actually allowed to eat.

Like I said, this happens because the ingredients for the soup are all so extremely low in calories, meaning that you can literally stuff your face with cabbage soup all day and still lose weight.

Naturally, this solves one of the biggest issue of most weight loss diets that tell you to limit your portion sizes to ridiculously small amounts.

Another major benefit of the cabbage soup diet is that not only are the ingredients low in calories, they're also low in price. Forget expensive powders, pills, and supplements, and get used to natural, healthy, and inexpensive foods.

But even the cabbage soup diet isn't without flaws.

The major problems of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss

The single biggest problem you'll run into when doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss is that it can get boring pretty fast.

Of course, this isn't just a problem when it comes to the cabbage soup diet. Lack of variety is easily one of the biggest reasons why people fall off the weight loss bandwagon in the first place.

Another problem worth mentioning is that the cabbage soup diet doesn't offer a "complete nutritional profile". In other words, it doesn't cover all of your daily needs for vitamins, minerals, protein, etc.

Again, this isn't just a problem of the cabbage soup diet, but pretty much any weight loss diet in existence. This is also why people are advised to stick to the cabbage soup diet for only 7 days at a time, and told not to go on the diet again before spending at least 2 weeks on a normal diet.

How to improve the cabbage soup diet?

The cabbage soup diet will deliver pretty awesome weight loss results on its own.

But let me show you some science on how it's possible to boost your calorie burn rate even further.

Before we get to that, let's take a look at what you can do to deal with easily the single biggest drawback of the cabbage soup diet.

Do this to make the cabbage soup diet feel less restrictive

The simplest way of keeping all the benefits of the cabbage soup diet, but make it a little less restrictive, is to find.

Recipes that rely on extremely low-calorie ingredients, just like the cabbage soup diet does.

If you can find more recipes designed in the same way as the cabbage soup diet, you can keep stuffing your face with food all day without gaining weight.

But you get to do it with while enjoying a lot more variety, which in turn skyrockets your chances of actually staying on the wagon.

With that out of the way, let's take a look at a science based way of boosting your weight loss results on the cabbage soup diet even further.

Drink this to speed up weight loss on the cabbage soup diet

Not a lot of people know this, but there's actually quite a few zero-calorie (or extremely low-calorie) drinks you can rely on to speed up fat burn.

These drinks can not only be used to get better and faster weight loss results on the cabbage soup diet, but will work on pretty much ANY weight loss diet.

One such example of a zero-calorie drink, that's been scientifically proven to boost fat loss, is oolong tea.

(If you want to find out how oolong tea can help you laser-target that stubborn body fat, how many calories per day it can help you burn, and how much weight it can help you lose, then read my science based guide to drinking oolong tea for weight loss.)

Time to wrap this whole thing up.

Actionable summary

Sure, it's quite possible to get good and fast results, if you want to do the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.

But as you saw, most of the lost weight won't actually come from your body fat reserves.

This doesn't mean the cabbage soup diet is a scam, because the same thing happens on pretty much all low-calorie diets.

And while the cabbage soup diet actually can help you lose some of that ugly belly fat, the diet itself could definitely use some improvements in terms of variety.

How to Stretch a Vegetable Soup Diet On For a Whole Week

What makes the 7 day soup diet so attractive is that there is a concise plan making it easy to get through because you already know what you are going to eat well in advance. This alleviates the hassle of planning meals out that can be a struggle in itself.

As for a healthy diet plan, the menu of foods you see in the 7 day vegetable soup diet may be more than you asked for.

Vegetable Soup: 7 Day Diet Meal Plan

The 7 day soup diet is split into separate days each with their own food groups that you will be concentrating on eating. It may seem like a lot at first but as you fill find out throughout the course of a week you can't say you didn't get enough to eat.

On the first day you are going to stick to eating soup and fruits. Eat as much soup as you like. However, that doesn't mean you don't have to set limits for the amount of food you eat. Keep it under 80 percent of what you can really eat. Develop a sense of what is good for your diet and eat it. Whatever you do, stay away from eating bananas.

On the second day you are going to concentrate on eating soup with vegetables. Whether you eat steamed vegetables are raw vegetables, there shouldn't be a problem. Just stay away from frying with oil. On this day you are going to add a little extra to your evening meal. That is either Satsumaimo Japanese sweet potatoes or Jagaimo potatoes. Any tuber works! Don't forget to keep your diet in mind. Day 2 is the only day you are allowed to eat baked potatoes that depending on the preparation method is 130 calories per potato. Eating 1 baked potato versus 3 is highly recommended.

The third day is filled with soup, fruits, and vegetables. Notice how day 3 is combines day 2 and day 1. This will make it easy to figure out what you eat. Like day 2 where you concentrated on eating vegetable, avoid fatty foods cooked with oil. The same goes for bananas. Whatever you do don't eat bananas. You will see why as you move through the 7 day diet plan eating soup.

On the fourth day you are going to finally get to eat that banana you put aside for later. Eat soup and bananas topped off with 500mL of milk (fat free or skim) for best results. Have a banana with every meal. That means you are allowed 3 bananas a day. Don't push it. As you would expect, a banana isn't going to be enough to pin down your appetite. That's where soup comes in. Having a healthy bowl of soup puts you over the edge for enough to push hunger pains aside.

It's day 5 and finally time to start eating meat! As you would expect from eating only vegetables and fruit, your body is starting to feel the effects of lack of protein and fat in your diet. In fact, you may be feeling a little dizzy by now. You are going to need to get some animal protein in your body right away, this instant! Just because you feel like you can eat a cow after obtaining from eating meat for 4 days straight doesn't mean you can't mix it up with soup containing meat such as chicken soup or beef stew. In addition, to getting more meat in your diet, eating tomatoes may be a good idea. As long as its within 6 tomatoes you have nothing to worry about.

In the sixth day we revert back to soup, veggies, and… yes meat! To be precise you are going to want to pick up some stake. It doesn't matter how much you eat as long as it is within 2 to 3 stakes. The amount of veggies you eat doesn't change, except for the part of not eating potatoes. This is not a day to be eating potatoes. Keep it under control.

On the last day you finally get to eat some carbs. That means busting out your favorite bread or bowl of rice. In addition to getting back on board eating carbohydrates you are going to want to pick up some 100% fruit juice, vegetables, and carbs to complements the soup you will be eating.

Benefits of Going on the 7 Day Soup Diet for Weight Loss

Vegetable soup due to the fact that it is low calorie is the foundation of soup diets. Eating low calorie soup not only helps you cut back on calories but gives you room to satisfy your appetite without feeling guilty after eating.

    4. Basic Fat-Burning Soup and Seven-Day…

Modified by Dr. Michael Tierra L.AC., O.M.D.

    Ingredients

    • 6 large green onions or large red onion
    • 1-2 cans of tomatoes
    • 1 large head of cabbage
    • 2 green peppers
    • 1 bunch celery
    • rosemary & tarragon for flavoring
    • shitake mushrooms for flavoring
    • 1 hot pepper
    • 2 or 3 cloves of chopped garlic
    • 1 4 inch piece of kombu seaweed
    • vegetable bouillon (such as Bioforce’s Plantaforce)

Spices such as rosemary, sage, thyme, tarragon or oregano can be added as desired toward the ending of cooking. Season with salt, pepper, parsley, bouillon or hot sauce, if desired. However, with the bouillon added, it probably requires little or no salt.

Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces, sauté in olive oil and cover with water. Boil fast for 10 (ten) minutes. Reduce heat to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Spices, such as rosemary, sage, thyme, tarragon or oregano, may be added as desired toward the end of cooking. Season with pepper, parsley, or hot sauce, if desired. Because of the bouillon, it will probably require little or no salt.

This soup can be eaten any time you are hungry. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day. However, if eaten alone for indefinite periods, you would suffer from malnutrition.

    Weight Loss Program

DAY ONE: All fruits except bananas. Cantaloupe and watermelon are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only the soup and fruits. For drinks – un-sweetened tea, cranberry juice, or water.

DAY TWO: All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with all the fresh, raw or canned vegetables. Try to eat leafy vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat along with the soup. At dinner time on this day, reward yourself with a big baked potato an butter. Do not eat any fruits on this day.

DAY THREE: Eat all soup, fruits and vegetables you want. Do not have a baked potato. If you have eaten for three days, as above, and have not cheated, you will find you have lost 5-7 pounds.

DAY FOUR: Bananas and skim milk. Eat as many as 3 bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you can on this day along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates and so is the milk, but on this particular day your body will need the potassium and the carbohydrates, proteins and calcium to lessen your craving for sweets.

DAY FIVE: Beef or lamb and tomatoes. Try to select high quality range fed animal protein, free of antibiotics or hormones. You may have 10-20 ounces of beef or lamb and a can of tomatoes or as many as 6 fresh tomatoes on this day. Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water on this day to wash away the uric acid in your body. Eat the soup at least once this day. You may substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb, or adzuki beans, chicken or fish.

DAY SIX: Beef or lamb & vegetables. Eat to your heart’s content of the beef or lamb and vegetables on this day. You can have two or three steaks if you like, with green leafy vegetables, but no baked potato. Be sure and eat the soup at least once on this day. You may substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb, or adzuki beans, chicken or fish.

DAY SEVEN: Brown rice, un-sweetened fruit and vegetables. Again, stuff yourself. Be sure to have the soup at least once today.

By the end of the seventh day, if you have not cheated on the diet, you will have lost 10-17 pounds. If you have lost more than 15 pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet again at day one.

This seven-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. As a matter of fact, if correctly followed, it will clean your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being as never before.

After only seven days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 lbs. and possibly as much as 17 lbs. Having an abundance of energy, continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference.

This diet is a fast way to burn off fat and the secret is that you will burn more calories than you take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being. This diet does not lend itself to drinking alcoholic beverages at any time because of the removal of fat buildup in your system. Go off the diet at least 24 hours before any intake of alcohol

Because everyone’s digestive system is different, this diet will affect everyone differently. After day three, you will have more energy than when you began, if you did not cheat. After being on the diet for several days, you will find your bowel movements have changed — eat a cup of bran or fiber. You may even find that you don’t need caffeine after the third day.

DEFINITE NO-NO’S – BREAD, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED DRINKS INCLUDING DIET DRINKS.

STICK WITH WATER, UN-SWEETENED TEA, BLACK COFFEE, UN-SWEETENED FRUIT JUICES, CRANBERRY JUICE AND SKIMMED MILK.

The basic fat-burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry. Eat as much as you wish. Remember, the more you eat, the more you will lose. No fried foods or bread. You can eat broiled chicken (absolutely no skin) instead of beef. Vegetarians can use adzuki or mung beans, seitan.

Any prescribed medication will not hurt you on this diet. Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference both mentally and physically. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only one of the beef days. You need the high protein in the beef on the other days.

One of the best herbal formulas to use during this fast is Triphala. Take from 2 to 4 tablets morning and midday and 4 in the evening. Instead of coffee or tea use a grain beverage. A very good fasting tea is a combination of nettles, chickweed and fennel seed, which also helps in weight reduction. There are many excellent green drinks and soya protein powders that can be used to supplement as needed or to replace the meat.

To keep the weight off, replace one meal a day with soup and eat more vegetables.

This diet is derived from one given at the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital for overweight heart patients to lose weight rapidly, usually before surgery. Modifications have been added by Dr. Michael Tierra, Acupuncturist and Herbalist.
