Cabbage soup diet: Quick results?
The cabbage soup diet, like most radical short-term diets, is not for everyone. Eating little but cabbage soup for seven days can produce amazing results, but it can also leave you feeling groggy, sluggish and unsatisfied.
That said, if you’re looking to shed those holiday pounds or lose weight quickly before an important event, the cabbage soup diet promises a 10-pound weight loss in just one week. Success on the cabbage soup diet depends largely on the individual.
Some may feel alienated by the boring and unappealing food selection, but others may find quick results to be motivating. It’s important to note that crash diets like this are not without health risks and should only be attempted under professional advisement.
With the cabbage soup diet, there is no calorie or carb counting and no recommended exercise regimen or lifestyle changes. Instead, the diet is based on a seven-day menu centered almost exclusively on a special cabbage-based soup.
The meal plan also includes a number of other dishes, such as low-calorie fruits and vegetables, lean meat or fish and brown rice. It’s recommended that these meals be eaten at home, since almost no restaurants will serve the specific soup and extra dishes. The diet is meant to last for one week, as it’s not high enough in nutrients to sustain healthy body functions for longer periods of time. If you wish to lose further weight, you are advised to wait a few weeks before attempting the diet again.
Although the diet is renowned for producing dramatic results, the Mayo Clinic notes that, since no changes are made to lifestyle and eating habits, the cabbage soup diet doesn’t help dieters sustain a healthy weight in the longer term.
The recipe for cabbage soup can vary slightly between different versions of the diet, but most include cabbage mixed with bullion and an array of other vegetables, such as carrots, celery, tomatoes, peppers and onions. A typical menu will read as follows:
- Day 1: Unlimited amounts of cabbage soup, along with any fruit except bananas, and black coffee, unsweetened tea, water or cranberry juice.
- Day 2: Cabbage soup as well as other vegetables including a baked potato with butter for dinner.
- Day 3: Cabbage soup and a mixture of approved fruits and vegetables.
- Day 4: Cabbage soup, six to eight bananas and two glasses of skimmed milk.
- Day 5: Cabbage soup, 15 to 20 ounces of beef, chicken or fish along with six tomatoes and six to eight glasses of water.
- Day 6: Cabbage soup, along with beef and low-calorie vegetables.
- Day 7: Cabbage soup, brown rice, pure fruit juice and vegetables.
In order to achieve the best results, dieters should be vigilant about sticking to the meal plan exactly. If you wish to maintain your new weight, consider a diet that includes more long-term lifestyle and dietary changes.
Your science based guide to doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss
Welcome to my science based guide to doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.
Read this guide all the way through and you'll know exactly what kind of weight loss results you can expect to get from the cabbage soup diet.
More importantly, you'll understand exactly where that lost weight came from (aka, how much body fat you can actually lose).
Before we dive in, here's a short overview of what's covered in this guide:
How much weight will you lose on the cabbage soup diet?
Before you ask yourself how much weight you will lose on the cabbage soup diet, you should ask yourself where that lost weight will come from.
Will you actually target your body fat? Or will you only lose some water weight, or worse, destroy some of your muscle mass?
(If you think that this can't be a big problem, then take a look at my extreme weight loss experiment, where I've proven that it's possible to lose almost 20 pounds in just 24 hours, only to gain all that weight back in less than two days!)
So let's take a closer look at some of the reasons why the cabbage soup diet seems to work so incredibly fast.
How does the cabbage soup diet work (and why it works so well)?
The cabbage soup diet is a low-sodium diet, meaning you could lose a lot of sodium-bound water weight, especially if you're currently eating a high-sodium diet.
(If you're interested in finding out how much weight a low-sodium diets can help you lose, you can read my guide on sodium/salt and weight loss, where I personally demonstrate how much extra water weight you could be holding on to because of sodium.)
The cabbage soup diet is based on an awesome idea of using low calorie foods to provide a good feeling of fullness and satisfaction while still keeping your calorie intake extremely low.
But because you will eat so little calories, you'll also end up losing a lot of water weight that's currently bound to something called "glycogen".
Glycogen is simply how our bodies store energy, and as soon as you go on some low-calorie diet, your body will start wiping out those glycogen energy reserves.
But just because you'll be losing a lot of glycogen-bound or sodium-bound water weight, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll actually be losing any of that stubborn body fat.
How much body fat will you lose on the cabbage soup diet?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you won't be losing any body fat on the cabbage soup diet.
I'm just saying you'll probably lose way less body fat than what the number on your bathroom scale might suggest.
While your final fat loss results will depend on how much soup you actually eat, you will probably end up eating anywhere between 500-1000 calories per day.
At that many calories per day, you can consider yourself lucky if you managed to lose 3 pounds of pure body fat per week. A more realistic number would be up to 2 pounds of body fat per week.
Let's take a look at some of the benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.
The major benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss
The single biggest benefit of the cabbage soup diet is the fact that there's no set limit on how much cabbage soup you're actually allowed to eat.
Like I said, this happens because the ingredients for the soup are all so extremely low in calories, meaning that you can literally stuff your face with cabbage soup all day and still lose weight.
Naturally, this solves one of the biggest issue of most weight loss diets that tell you to limit your portion sizes to ridiculously small amounts.
Another major benefit of the cabbage soup diet is that not only are the ingredients low in calories, they're also low in price. Forget expensive powders, pills, and supplements, and get used to natural, healthy, and inexpensive foods.
But even the cabbage soup diet isn't without flaws.
The major problems of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss
The single biggest problem you'll run into when doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss is that it can get boring pretty fast.
Of course, this isn't just a problem when it comes to the cabbage soup diet. Lack of variety is easily one of the biggest reasons why people fall off the weight loss bandwagon in the first place.
Another problem worth mentioning is that the cabbage soup diet doesn't offer a "complete nutritional profile". In other words, it doesn't cover all of your daily needs for vitamins, minerals, protein, etc.
Again, this isn't just a problem of the cabbage soup diet, but pretty much any weight loss diet in existence. This is also why people are advised to stick to the cabbage soup diet for only 7 days at a time, and told not to go on the diet again before spending at least 2 weeks on a normal diet.
How to improve the cabbage soup diet?
The cabbage soup diet will deliver pretty awesome weight loss results on its own.
But let me show you some science on how it's possible to boost your calorie burn rate even further.
Before we get to that, let's take a look at what you can do to deal with easily the single biggest drawback of the cabbage soup diet.
Do this to make the cabbage soup diet feel less restrictive
The simplest way of keeping all the benefits of the cabbage soup diet, but make it a little less restrictive, is to find.
Recipes that rely on extremely low-calorie ingredients, just like the cabbage soup diet does.
If you can find more recipes designed in the same way as the cabbage soup diet, you can keep stuffing your face with food all day without gaining weight.
But you get to do it with while enjoying a lot more variety, which in turn skyrockets your chances of actually staying on the wagon.
With that out of the way, let's take a look at a science based way of boosting your weight loss results on the cabbage soup diet even further.
Drink this to speed up weight loss on the cabbage soup diet
Not a lot of people know this, but there's actually quite a few zero-calorie (or extremely low-calorie) drinks you can rely on to speed up fat burn.
These drinks can not only be used to get better and faster weight loss results on the cabbage soup diet, but will work on pretty much ANY weight loss diet.
One such example of a zero-calorie drink, that's been scientifically proven to boost fat loss, is oolong tea.
(If you want to find out how oolong tea can help you laser-target that stubborn body fat, how many calories per day it can help you burn, and how much weight it can help you lose, then read my science based guide to drinking oolong tea for weight loss.)
Time to wrap this whole thing up.
Sure, it's quite possible to get good and fast results, if you want to do the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.
But as you saw, most of the lost weight won't actually come from your body fat reserves.
This doesn't mean the cabbage soup diet is a scam, because the same thing happens on pretty much all low-calorie diets.
And while the cabbage soup diet actually can help you lose some of that ugly belly fat, the diet itself could definitely use some improvements in terms of variety.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Plan and Recipe
The cabbage soup diet is an excellent way to kick-start your diet program and to help point you in the right direction for a more moderate long-term eating plan. The diet is low fat and high in fiber, and it will help curb your cravings during the critical first week of your weight-loss plan. This guide will help you learn more about the cabbage soup diet so you can decide if it is right for you.
The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan
The cabbage soup diet plan is designed to be followed only seven days at a time with at least two weeks in between each cycle. While you can find different variations of the soup online, the base ingredients all include tomatoes, cabbage, green peppers, onions, and bouillon. You can play around with spices to change the taste, and you can add additional vegetables or even meat on certain days.
- Day One: Eat all the fruit you want—except bananas. Eat only the soup and the fruit for the first day. Drink unsweetened tea, cranberry juice, and water.
- Day Two: Eat all the fresh, raw, or cooked vegetables you want. Choose green vegetables and stay away from dried beans, peas, and corn. Continue to eat as much soup as you want. At dinner, reward yourself with a baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit.
- Day Three: Mix days one and two. Eat all the soup, vegetables, and fruit you want. Do not eat a baked potato.
- Day Four: Consume as many bananas and as much skim milk as you want along with your soup. This will help curb your desire for sweets.
- Day Five: Eat ten to twenty ounces of beef or broiled or baked chicken without skin and up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water, and continue to eat your soup at least once. You may also choose broiled fish on one but not both of the meat days.
- Day Six: Eat all you want of beef and vegetables. Do not eat a baked potato. Have your soup at least once.
- Day Seven: Stuff yourself with brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables. Eat your soup at least once.
This diet has been around for a long time because it offers fast and effective short-term weight loss, and it revolves around the consumption of soup every day. You consistently add new foods each day throughout the plan, which makes it easy to continue without getting bored. Although the plan does not provide you with a completely balanced diet, and the liquid in the soup will keep you hydrated. The soup alone offers a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, including:
One of the main reasons people cheat on other diets is due to hunger and cravings; because you don’t restrict the amount you eat on this diet, you shouldn’t become hungry. While many diets require a lot of expensive foods and extensive menu plans, this diet is relatively inexpensive and simple to follow.
Cons of the Diet
The cabbage soup diet is essentially a fad diet. It works because the large quantities of cabbage and broth act as a diuretic. In cabbage soup diet reviews, some people have reported feeling lightheaded or weak while on the diet. This could be from dehydration, so you should make sure you drink plenty of water if you decide to try it. Another complaint about this diet is the fact you have to eat the soup every day. While it is flavorful, the soup can get old when you have to eat it every day over the course of a week. For this reason, the diet is not suitable for long-term weight loss. It is also not a good choice for vegans or vegetarians, because on the fifth and sixth days you must consume large quantities of beef.
Cabbage Soup Diet Before and After
The majority of the weight loss you experience will be water weight, which will be regained the minute you start eating a normal diet again. Proponents of the diet claim you can lose up to ten pounds in a week. This is excellent for those who are looking to drop a few pounds for a special event. For long-term weight loss, select a diet that helps you aim to lose one to two pounds each week.
Keys to Success
To achieve the best cabbage soup diet results, there are a few things you can do to ensure the most weight loss. Make sure you follow the diet exactly. If you sway even a little from the original plan, you will sabotage your results. Drink at least four glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and to flush your body of toxins. Whenever you feel like giving up, remember it only lasts for seven days. Print out the directions to the diet and leave them in plain view in your kitchen—this will give you no excuse to cheat. Make sure you eat plenty of soup. The more soup you eat, the more weight you will lose. Don’t try to starve yourself, or you will end up cheating.
Cabbage Soup Diet Recipe

- 2 green bell peppers
