The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Promise

Fans claim you can drop 10 pounds or more in a week. Some people use it to kick-start their weight loss plan, or to trim a few pounds for a special event.

But before you stock up on cabbage, know that this crash diet won't help you in the long run, and it doesn't give your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

What You Can Eat

Just like the name says, the bulk of this diet is fat-free cabbage soup, eaten two to three times a day with other allowed foods assigned each day. Here's what you can add:

  • Day 1: Fruit, except bananas
  • Day 2: Vegetables like leafy greens (not starchy), but no fruit
  • Day 3: Fruits and vegetables
  • Day 4: Bananas and skim milk
  • Day 5: Beef (or baked chicken without the skin) and tomatoes
  • Day 6: Beef and vegetables
  • Day 7: Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables

There are different recipes for the soup, which is recommended every day of the diet. They all have similar ingredients, such as tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and bouillon.

Level of Effort: Medium

Limitations: Your menu options are severely limited on this diet. It gets very boring, very quickly. If you want to try it again, it's recommended that you wait 2 weeks first.

Cooking and shopping: Get out your soup pot. You will need to make the cabbage soup and cook some of the vegetables recommended in the plan. Your shopping list will be very short for the week.

Packaged foods or meals? No.

In-person meetings? No.

Exercise: The cabbage soup diet doesn't include exercise, and working out at high levels isn't a great idea on such a low-calorie diet. Your body just won't have enough gas in the tank for exercise.

Does It Allow for Dietary Restrictions or Preferences?

There's not a lot of room to tweak the diet, since it's so rigid.

It is low in fat, because you eat mostly vegetables. But it's not vegetarian or vegan, since some meat is allowed.

What Else You Should Know

Cost: The only cost is for the ingredients, which you buy yourself. Some websites promoting the diet say you should take a supplement to make up for the nutrients you'll be missing from food.

Support: None. You do this diet on your own.

What Dr. Melinda Ratini Says:

You'll lose weight, but only in the short run. This is strictly a lose-weight quick scheme.

You'll likely get less than 1,000 calories a day on the limited menu. That's far fewer than the 2,000 daily calories recommended for most adults.

Since you're getting so few calories, the pounds come off quickly, but mostly you'll lose water weight. And chances are, you'll gain it all back as soon as you start eating a normal diet again.

Health experts don't recommend following very low-calorie diets unless you're under a doctor's care. A better bet is to aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds each week on a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Is It Good for Certain Conditions?

Because it includes so few carbs, this diet could wreak havoc with any diabetes treatment plan.

Salt is not addressed on the plan, so if you've been told to cut back on the sodium, you'll have to hold back on using the salt shaker and bouillon when making the soup or cooking your food.

Since you'll likely regain any weight that you lose, the diet won't have a lasting positive impact on heart disease, cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

Though this diet is fast, cheap, and simple, it's not easy to stick with. It will likely leave you feeling hungry, weak, and bored. You might even feel sick. And if you follow the Cabbage Soup Diet for more than a week, you could run short on key nutrients.

Nor does the diet encourage the necessary lifestyle changes you need to make in order to be healthier and have lasting weight loss.

The drastic weight loss you might experience with The Cabbage Soup Diet can cause health problems and can be dangerous even when it’s done under a doctor’s supervision.

Never start this diet without talking to your doctor first. If she thinks you need a very low-calorie diet, she'll likely show you a much healthier way to go about it.

The Cabbage Soup Diet: For Weight Loss or Toxin Removal?

The cabbage soup diet is used to drop pounds quickly; some sites even promise that it will help you lose 10 pounds in one week. It’s generally considered a fad diet, in that it’s designed for short-term weight loss and requires no long-term commitment.

The question is should it be used to lose weight fast , or is it more effective as a natural way to jump-start a detoxing cleanse?

What Is the Cabbage Soup Diet?

The low-fat, high-fiber diet consists of a fat-free cabbage soup that is eaten one to three times a day. Here is a perfect example of a cabbage soup diet recipe. On each day, there are other assigned foods that are allowed.

Eat only the soup and vegetables all day, especially root vegetables . Avoid corn, beans and fruit. As an indulgence, you can end the day with a baked potato and butter.

Eat cabbage soup, fruits and green vegetables all day. Do not eat any starchy veggies, like potatoes.

Eat cabbage soup, bananas and skim milk. This day is supposed to decrease the desire for sweets.

Eat cabbage soup (at least twice) with grass-fed beef (or baked chicken without the skin) and nutritious tomatoes . Drink six to eight glasses of water.

Eat cabbage soup (at least once) with beef and vegetables.

Eat cabbage soup (at least once) with brown rice — not white rice — unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables.

How Does the Cabbage Soup Diet Work?

On the cabbage soup diet, you likely eat 1,000 calories a day. This is half of the recommend 2,000 calories a day, so you are going to lose weight. Because the diet consists of low-fat and high-fiber foods , you are going to lose plenty of water weight.

This diet also works as a liver cleanse because it rids the body of toxins that are built-up in the liver.

What Are the Limitations of the Cabbage Soup Diet?

Your options are very limited on the cabbage soup diet. It can leave you unsatisfied and bored. The pounds come off very quickly on this diet because you eating so little calories. But it’s mostly because you lose water weight, and when you start eating regularly again, the weight will most likely come back.

This is not a diet that can implemented into the everyday lifestyle; in fact, if you wanted to try the diet again after the first week, it’s recommended that you wait two weeks first. By then, you may gain back the weight you lost originally. The wait is because you need to fill up on key nutrients, being that the diet consists of very little.

Additionally, you don’t want to follow the cabbage soup diet long term due to the risks of low-fat diets .

My Cabbage Soup Diet Recommendations

Sometimes we need to press the restart button and give our bodies a chance to cleanse and re-emerage as a healthier and toxic-free vehicle. Every person’s health and well-being are dependent on how his or her body removes and purges toxins.

Cabbage helps avoid low potassium because it’s a high source of potassium, which helps lower systolic blood pressure, naturally lower cholesterol and support a healthy cardiovascular system, in addition to helping to cleanse your liver. The cabbage soup diet provides enough potassium to stimulate a liver detox, and for that reason I recommend that you follow the diet for three to 10 days. Keep in mind that this is not a long-term diet, and although it can be used for short-term weight loss, it’s also useful in for detoxification.

Cabbage is also a cruciferous vegetable , so it reduces inflammation, balances blood sugar, stimulates immunity, shrinks tumors and destroys cancer. A 2014 study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention suggests that cabbage is a source of important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are related to the prevention of chronic diseases associated to oxidative stress, such as in cancer and coronary artery disease.

Another study published in the Western Journal of Medicine tested the efficacy of cabbage juice in treating peptic ulcers, which are ulcers related to digestion. The average crater healing time for 62 patients with duodenal (first part of the small intestine) and gastric ulcers was 39 days; some patients saw significant results within seven days of cabbage juice treatment.

Here’s the bottom line: The cabbage soup diet is not a long-term diet. In order to thrive, day in and day out, your body needs a healthy and well-balanced portion of every food group. That ensures you get the essential vitamins and minerals that you need.

As a way to cleanse the digestive tract, while providing an abundance of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents , I recommend the cabbage soup diet for a limited amount of time. Try it for three days and see how you feel; maybe you will want to stop there. If you decide to keep at it, make sure to stop after 10 days.

This fad diet has been around for years, promising followers dramatic weight loss in seven days. But is slurping cabbage soup day after day a healthy way to lose weight?

This diet, as the name suggests, revolves around the consumption of cabbage soup on a regular basis. For each day, there is a variation of cabbage soup to prepare with ingredients like tomatoes, green peppers, onions, mushrooms and bouillon. Here is what the one-week plan looks like:

Day 1: Several servings of cabbage soup and fruits (except bananas)

Day 2: Several servings of cabbage soup and vegetables (except starchy vegetables like beans, peas or corn)

Day 3: Several servings of cabbage soup, fruits and vegetables

Day 4: Several servings of cabbage soup, no more than eight bananas, unlimited nonfat milk

Day 5: At least one serving of cabbage soup, 10 to 20 ounces of skinless chicken or beef, no more than six tomatoes, unlimited water

Day 6: Unlimited vegetables (except starchy ones) and beef (up to several servings)

Day 7: At least one serving of cabbage soup, brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juice

You can purchase numerous books on the Cabbage Soup Diet online, and there are several websites you can visit on the diet. Within the past three years, at least seven books were published on the diet.

The price you pay, however, is more than the cost of the book and all that cabbage. This is a very limiting diet and your palate will suffer. Eating the few allowable foods for the week can get rather boring.

Further, the diet is also limiting in the allowable food groups, compromising your overall health and nutrient intake.

Not many dishes to clean, as most of the food is cooked in your soup pot

Short shopping list

The Not So Good

The diet has dangerously low calories, making it unhealthy

Lack of variation, which makes it impossible to take in all the nutrients you need to stay healthy

Does not promote lifelong healthy habits to help maintain weight loss in the long run

Does not promote exercise (although working out when eating so few calories isn’t a good idea)

The Bottom Line

This diet is not a healthy way to lose weight. Although you will probably lose weight rather quickly, you’ll gain it all back in no time. The healthiest way to lose weight and keep it off is by following a well-balanced eating plan that teaches you lifelong healthy eating habits; this diet does not do that.
