Basic Fat-Burning Soup

Fat burning soup, also known as cabbage soup, is one of many the American Heart Association considers a fad diet. Claims of quick weight loss, an over-emphasis on a single type of food and the risk of developing nutrient deficiencies form the base of AHA concerns. Despite this, you can find recipes for a basic fat burning soup and supporters of this diet on a number of Internet sites and blogs. While the choice remains yours, taking the time to analyze and assess the merits and drawbacks of fat burning soup can help you make a decision that works for you.

While ingredient amounts may differ depending on the recipe you follow, a basic fat burning soup is a vegetable soup that includes green onions, diced tomatoes, cabbage, green peppers and celery. The main, and usually only seasoning, is one package of dry onion soup mix. While you eat as much of this soup as you want, any time you want, if you use this soup as the main component of a seven day diet plan, each of the seven days also includes additional food combinations.

Day 1: Soup, fruit, with the exception of bananas and unsweetened tea, cranberry juice or water; Day 2: Soup, unlimited fresh, raw, cooked or canned vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables and a large baked potato with butter; Day 3: Soup, unlimited fruits and vegetables; Day 4: Soup, up to three bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, skim milk and as much water as you can drink; Day 5: Soup, 10 to 20 ounces of beef, up to six fresh tomatoes or one can of tomatoes and six to eight glasses of water; Day 6: Soup, unlimited beef and vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables; Day 7: Soup, unlimited vegetables, brown rice and unsweetened fruit juice

Proponents of this diet claim that due to the fat burning qualities of this soup, you can lose 10 to 17 pounds in the seven days you follow the diet. Opponents of this diet claim weight loss is due to severe calorie restriction rather than any special qualities this soup may possess. This diet provides only about 500 calories per day, making it in essence, a starvation diet.

Basic fat burning soup can be of benefit if you are not looking for a long-term weight loss diet but do need to lose some weight in a hurry. In addition, the ingredients that comprise this soup are easy to find and not expensive.

Disadvantages

In addition to severe calorie restriction, fat burning soup is nutritionally deficient. Fatigue, food cravings and a change in your mood are common effects. Also, an over reliance on vegetables and a drastic change in your diet can cause stomach problems and changes in bowel movements. Finally, while its effects may be temporary if you stop eating fat burning soup after seven days, you will most likely gain back all the weight you lose.

Basic Burning Diet Fat Soup

BASIC FAT BURNING SOUP:

  • Carrots & Green Beans (AS MANY AS YOU WANT)
  • 6 large green onions
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 or 2 cans of tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pkg Lipton Soup Mix
  • Season with salt, pepper, curry, parsley, if desired, or bouillon
  • (1 cup of beef broth or hot sauce)

Cut the vegetables into small or medium pieces and cover with water - boil fast for ten minutes.

Cut to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender.

This soup can be eaten anytime you are hungry.

Eat as much as you want, whenever you want.

This soup will not add calories.

THE MORE YOU EAT THE MORE YOU WILL LOSE.

Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day.

If eaten alone for indefinite periods, YOU WILL SUFFER MALNUTRITION.

Cantaloupe and watermelon are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only the soup and fruits.

FOR DRINKS: Unsweetened tea, cranberry juice or water.

Eat until you are stuffed with all the fresh raw vegetables. Try to eat green leafy vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat along with the soup. At dinner reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. DO NOT eat any fruits at dinner.

DO NOT have a baked potato.

If you have eaten for three days, as above, and have not cheated, you will find that you have lost 5 to 7 pounds.

Eat as many as 3 bananas and drink as many glasses of water as you can on this day, along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates and so is the milk, but on this particular day your body will need the potassium and the carbohydrates, proteins & calcium to lessen your craving for sweets.

You may have 10-20 ounces of beef and a can of tomatoes or as many as 6 fresh tomatoes on this day. Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water this day to wash away the uric acid in your body. Eat the soup at least once today.

Eat to your heart's content of the beef and veggies this day. You can even have two or three steaks if you like with green leafy vegetables. BUT NO BAKED POTATO. Eat the soup at least once this day.

At the end of the seventh day, if you have not cheated, you will have lost 10-17 pounds. If you have lost more than 15 pounds, stay off the diet for at least two days before resuming again from day one.

--NO BREAD, ALCOHOL, OR ANY CARBONATED DRINKS ARE ALLOWED--

This seven day eating plan can be used as often as you like, as a matter of fact, if correctly followed it will clean your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being as never before.

After only seven days of this process, you will begin to feel lighter by at least 10 and possibly 17 pounds, having an abundance of energy. Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference.

This diet is fast fat burning and the secret is that you will burn more calories than you take in. This diet does not lend itself to drinking any alcoholic beverages at any time because of the removal for fat build up in your system. GO OFF THE DIET FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE ANY INTAKE OF ALCOHOL.

Because everyone's digestive system is different, this diet affects everyone differently. After day three you will have more energy than when you began, if you do not cheat. After being on the diet for several days you will find your bowel movements have changed. **Eat a cup of bran or fiber*** Although you can have black coffee with this diet, you may find that you don't need the caffeine after the third day.

BREAD, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED DRINKS (INCLUDING DIET)

Stick with water, unsweetened tea, black coffee, unsweetened fruit juices, cranberry juice & skimmed milk.

The basic fat burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry. Eat as much as you wish. Remember - THE MORE YOU EAT THE MORE YOU WILL LOSE. NO FRIED FOODS OR BREAD. You can eat broiled or baked chicken instead of meat. ABSOLUTELY NO SKIN ON THE CHICKEN.

Any prescribed medication will not hurt you on this diet. Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel the difference both mentally and physically. If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef on only 1 of the beef days. You need high protein in the beef the other days.

THIS DIET WAS PREPARED BY SACRED HEART MEMORIAL HOSPITAL and used for overweight heart patients to lose rapidly, usually before any surgery.

    Ingredients

    • 6 large green onions or large red onion
    • 1-2 cans of tomatoes
    • 1 large head of cabbage
    • 2 green peppers
    • 1 bunch celery
    • rosemary & tarragon for flavoring
    • shitake mushrooms for flavoring
    • 1 hot pepper
    • 2 or 3 cloves of chopped garlic
    • 1 4 inch piece of kombu seaweed
    • vegetable bouillon (such as Bioforce’s Plantaforce)

    Spices such as rosemary, sage, thyme, tarragon or oregano can be added as desired toward the ending of cooking. Season with salt, pepper, parsley, bouillon or hot sauce, if desired. However, with the bouillon added, it probably requires little or no salt.

    Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces, sauté in olive oil and cover with water. Boil fast for 10 (ten) minutes. Reduce heat to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Spices, such as rosemary, sage, thyme, tarragon or oregano, may be added as desired toward the end of cooking. Season with pepper, parsley, or hot sauce, if desired. Because of the bouillon, it will probably require little or no salt.

    This soup can be eaten any time you are hungry. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want. This soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day. However, if eaten alone for indefinite periods, you would suffer from malnutrition.

    Weight Loss Program

    DAY ONE: All fruits except bananas. Cantaloupe and watermelon are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only the soup and fruits. For drinks – un-sweetened tea, cranberry juice, or water.

    DAY TWO: All vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed with all the fresh, raw or canned vegetables. Try to eat leafy vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat along with the soup. At dinner time on this day, reward yourself with a big baked potato an butter. Do not eat any fruits on this day.

    DAY THREE: Eat all soup, fruits and vegetables you want. Do not have a baked potato. If you have eaten for three days, as above, and have not cheated, you will find you have lost 5-7 pounds.

    DAY FOUR: Bananas and skim milk. Eat as many as 3 bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you can on this day along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates and so is the milk, but on this particular day your body will need the potassium and the carbohydrates, proteins and calcium to lessen your craving for sweets.

    DAY FIVE: Beef or lamb and tomatoes. Try to select high quality range fed animal protein, free of antibiotics or hormones. You may have 10-20 ounces of beef or lamb and a can of tomatoes or as many as 6 fresh tomatoes on this day. Try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water on this day to wash away the uric acid in your body. Eat the soup at least once this day. You may substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb, or adzuki beans, chicken or fish.

    DAY SIX: Beef or lamb & vegetables. Eat to your heart’s content of the beef or lamb and vegetables on this day. You can have two or three steaks if you like, with green leafy vegetables, but no baked potato. Be sure and eat the soup at least once on this day. You may substitute either wheat gluten (seitan) for the beef or lamb, or adzuki beans, chicken or fish.

    DAY SEVEN: Brown rice, un-sweetened fruit and vegetables. Again, stuff yourself. Be sure to have the soup at least once today.

    By the end of the seventh day, if you have not cheated on the diet, you will have lost 10-17 pounds. If you have lost more than 15 pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet again at day one.

    This seven-day eating plan can be used as often as you like. As a matter of fact, if correctly followed, it will clean your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well-being as never before.

    DEFINITE NO-NO’S – BREAD, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED DRINKS INCLUDING DIET DRINKS.

    STICK WITH WATER, UN-SWEETENED TEA, BLACK COFFEE, UN-SWEETENED FRUIT JUICES, CRANBERRY JUICE AND SKIMMED MILK.

    The basic fat-burning soup can be eaten anytime you feel hungry. Eat as much as you wish. Remember, the more you eat, the more you will lose. No fried foods or bread. You can eat broiled chicken (absolutely no skin) instead of beef. Vegetarians can use adzuki or mung beans, seitan.

    One of the best herbal formulas to use during this fast is Triphala. Take from 2 to 4 tablets morning and midday and 4 in the evening. Instead of coffee or tea use a grain beverage. A very good fasting tea is a combination of nettles, chickweed and fennel seed, which also helps in weight reduction. There are many excellent green drinks and soya protein powders that can be used to supplement as needed or to replace the meat.

    To keep the weight off, replace one meal a day with soup and eat more vegetables.

    This diet is derived from one given at the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital for overweight heart patients to lose weight rapidly, usually before surgery. Modifications have been added by Dr. Michael Tierra, Acupuncturist and Herbalist.
