The Cabbage Soup Diet: Your complete diet plan!

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a very strict, very low calorie diet and isn’t for the faint hearted!

Surprisingly, although you do eat mainly cabbage soup, not many people realise that you can also ‘treat yourself’ to fruit, other veg and even some meat (on certain days). Due to the cabbage soup diet’s extreme nature, you shouldn’t stay on it for more than a week. It’s been a popular quick-fix diet for years due to the fact that you can lose up to 10 pounds in a short period of time, but is it the right weight-loss plan for you? And what happened when GoodtoKnow user Caitlin tried the cabbage soup diet for herself? Read on to find out…

What is the Cabbage Soup Diet?

The Cabbage Soup Diet is an extremely low-fat, high-fibre diet that lasts seven days. By the end of the week, fans of the diet claim you’ll have lost up to 10 pounds. It’s only designed as a kick-start to help you lose weight quickly and is not supposed to be a long-term healthy eating plan.

How does the Cabbage Soup Diet work?

It’s simple – you make and eat as much cabbage soup as you want! You’re also allowed a combination of different low fat foods on each day, mainly other fruits and vegetables. The homemade cabbage soup that you make on the cabbage soup diet plan has virtually no calories so, hopefully, you’ll feel full and still lose weight.

Who is the Cabbage Soup Diet good for?

People who want to lose weight quickly for a special occasion like a wedding or a party. If you’re looking for a cheap diet to follow then the cabbage soup diet is certainly that. If you find it hard to stick to diets then you only need to stick to the plan for a week to see results, plus cabbage is full of fibre and antioxidants!

What are the pros and cons of Cabbage Soup Diet?

This diet can leave you light-headed and full of wind (lovely). It can be hard to stick to because it’s quite repetitive – cabbage soup is pretty boring after day three. There’s also a high chance you’ll put all the weight you lost back on when you come off the diet, so it’s just a quick fix.

‘I tried the Cabbage Soup Diet’

Caitlin Fitzgerald, 54, from Morpeth, Northumberland, tried the Cabbage Soup Diet. But how did she get on? And did she lose any weight… ?

‘My husband’s work do was coming up and I wanted to fit back into a slinky black dress I’d had for years. I put off dieting until I only had a couple of weeks to go then suddenly panicked! The cabbage soup diet seemed a good way of losing weight fast.

I made a fresh batch of the cabbage soup every two or three days and followed the other bits of the plan, like eating lots of fruit and veg. I didn’t mind the cabbage soup to start with but by about day four, I’d gone right off it! I tried to make it more interesting by adding different veg and herbs but it didn’t make it much better.

It had rotten side effects too – my husband nearly ended up sleeping in the spare room I was so full of wind! But I stuck at it for a week and lost four pounds. I fitted into my little black dress but, to be honest, I’d put all the weight back on two weeks later!’

The way it works is simple - dieters eat mainly cabbage soup for one week, together with a selection of other foods that vary on each day of the diet.

We've included a link to the cabbage soup recipe and the seven day diet plan below, together with a list of pros and cons.

If you have a special occasion coming up or you simply need to lose weight fast, the Cabbage Soup Diet may be just what you need.

Although not suitable for long-term weight loss, the Cabbage Soup Diet is a low-fat, high-fiber diet that will help you get into shape fast before you embark on a more moderate long-term eating plan.

Do you have questions about the Cabbage Soup Diet? There’s a good chance you’ll find your answer on my Cabbage Soup Frequently Asked Questions page.

Pros and Cons of the Cabbage Soup Diet

Pros: You’ll lose weight fast, and for the week, you can eat as much of the foods listed in the program as you want. Although the diet is only for seven days (and shouldn’t be followed for longer), it provides a great “kick-start” for a more moderate diet.

Cons: Some people find the soup bland. Others report feeling light-headed, weak, and have suffered from decreased concentration (although I hear that many people think the diet is worth the effort anyway, since they lose so much weight!).

What the Cabbage Soup Diet is NOT

The Cabbage Soup Diet is sometimes referred to as the “Mayo Clinic Diet,” the “Sacred Heart Hospital Diet,” and by many other names. Interestingly, this diet is not affiliated with either the Mayo Clinic or the Sacred Heart Hospital system.

Number 1 Reason why the Cabbage Soup Diet Fails

As mentioned, the soup can tend to get a bit bland, especially since you are eating it several time a day….every day for a week. For this reason alone, a lot of people drop the diet.

To liven things up a bit, I came up with a couple different spice packs that can be added to your soup recipe. These packs are premeasured, all that you have to do is to add one of pack per batch of your cabbage soup. The soup comes out very tasty – and for that reason it helps you stay on your diet. Click here to find out more about my spice packs.

The Problem With Most “Mainstream” Diets

Most diets – especially “mainstream” diets, and those recommended by major medical institutions – work slowly but surely, resulting in around 1 pound of weight loss per week.

This “slow and steady” way to lose weight is certainly healthy, but suffers from one major flaw: most people get discouraged and quit whatever diet they are on if they don’t see results quickly. This is how the Cabbage Soup Diet can be your savior and catalyst into a more long term solution.

Seven Keys to Success

  1. Follow the diet to the letter!
  2. Drink at least 4 glasses of water per day (or more!).
  3. Remember – it is only seven days long!
  4. Complement the diet with a quality daily multi-vitamin.
  5. Print information from this site and refer to it daily (especially the 7 Day Plan!).
  6. Eat plenty of soup – the more you eat, the more you should lose! Do not try to starve yourself or you’ll probably cheat (this is what we don’t want).
  7. Add my spice pack to liven up the soup to add variety and make it taste great. 🙂

Sometimes we all need to get away and recharge our batteries!
