The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Promise

Fans claim you can drop 10 pounds or more in a week. Some people use it to kick-start their weight loss plan, or to trim a few pounds for a special event.

But before you stock up on cabbage, know that this crash diet won't help you in the long run, and it doesn't give your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

What You Can Eat

Just like the name says, the bulk of this diet is fat-free cabbage soup, eaten two to three times a day with other allowed foods assigned each day. Here's what you can add:

  • Day 1: Fruit, except bananas
  • Day 2: Vegetables like leafy greens (not starchy), but no fruit
  • Day 3: Fruits and vegetables
  • Day 4: Bananas and skim milk
  • Day 5: Beef (or baked chicken without the skin) and tomatoes
  • Day 6: Beef and vegetables
  • Day 7: Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables

There are different recipes for the soup, which is recommended every day of the diet. They all have similar ingredients, such as tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and bouillon.

Level of Effort: Medium

Limitations: Your menu options are severely limited on this diet. It gets very boring, very quickly. If you want to try it again, it's recommended that you wait 2 weeks first.

Cooking and shopping: Get out your soup pot. You will need to make the cabbage soup and cook some of the vegetables recommended in the plan. Your shopping list will be very short for the week.

Packaged foods or meals? No.

In-person meetings? No.

Exercise: The cabbage soup diet doesn't include exercise, and working out at high levels isn't a great idea on such a low-calorie diet. Your body just won't have enough gas in the tank for exercise.

Does It Allow for Dietary Restrictions or Preferences?

There's not a lot of room to tweak the diet, since it's so rigid.

It is low in fat, because you eat mostly vegetables. But it's not vegetarian or vegan, since some meat is allowed.

What Else You Should Know

Cost: The only cost is for the ingredients, which you buy yourself. Some websites promoting the diet say you should take a supplement to make up for the nutrients you'll be missing from food.

Support: None. You do this diet on your own.

What Dr. Melinda Ratini Says:

You'll lose weight, but only in the short run. This is strictly a lose-weight quick scheme.

You'll likely get less than 1,000 calories a day on the limited menu. That's far fewer than the 2,000 daily calories recommended for most adults.

Since you're getting so few calories, the pounds come off quickly, but mostly you'll lose water weight. And chances are, you'll gain it all back as soon as you start eating a normal diet again.

Health experts don't recommend following very low-calorie diets unless you're under a doctor's care. A better bet is to aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds each week on a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Is It Good for Certain Conditions?

Because it includes so few carbs, this diet could wreak havoc with any diabetes treatment plan.

Salt is not addressed on the plan, so if you've been told to cut back on the sodium, you'll have to hold back on using the salt shaker and bouillon when making the soup or cooking your food.

Since you'll likely regain any weight that you lose, the diet won't have a lasting positive impact on heart disease, cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

Though this diet is fast, cheap, and simple, it's not easy to stick with. It will likely leave you feeling hungry, weak, and bored. You might even feel sick. And if you follow the Cabbage Soup Diet for more than a week, you could run short on key nutrients.

Nor does the diet encourage the necessary lifestyle changes you need to make in order to be healthier and have lasting weight loss.

The drastic weight loss you might experience with The Cabbage Soup Diet can cause health problems and can be dangerous even when it’s done under a doctor’s supervision.

Never start this diet without talking to your doctor first. If she thinks you need a very low-calorie diet, she'll likely show you a much healthier way to go about it.

Fast Weight Loss with the Cabbage Soup Diet

Review by WorkingMomof2

Pros: Fast weight loss, unrestricted quantities of food

Cons: Gas, gas and more gas! Weight loss is temporary, not a lifestyle change

A few years ago, the Hollywood Grapefruit Diet hit the scene with ads screaming how you could lose 10 pounds in two days. Who could resist? But long before the Hollywood Grapefruit Diet, there was The Cabbage Soup Diet, with claims of dramatic weight loss as well. Does it work? What does it contain? What else should you know?

This is a short-term diet, intended to be followed for one (maximum of two) weeks. The general premise is that you consume unlimited quantities of a soup made of a variety of vegetables, primarily cabbage and other extremely low-calorie high-fiber veggies, every day. You also get a few other specific foods that you are allowed to eat each day, but these vary day to day.

This is a specific diet, like the Atkins Diet, where specific items are included and others are not allowed at all. Substitutions within a food group are allowed; however, you must eat the soup every day and you must consume some of the other items each day. Since each day has a different list of "allowed" items, it's important to review the list before beginning the diet. For example, on day one, you can eat all the fruits you want. Watery fruits such as melons are encouraged, as they help flush your system out; bananas are not allowed.

Of course the bottom line is, does it work? Well, honestly, I am sad to say that it does indeed work. I say "saddened" because this is a short-cut diet. It does not force the dieter to change their lifestyle, nor does it provide any lasting effects. Depending on your activity level and your starting weight, you will probably lose between 4 and 10 pounds on this diet in the first week.

Are there any side effects? Yes -- several, including significant flatulence and loose bowel movements in most people as the soup flushes out your system. My sister used to call this The Cabbage Poop Diet, and she wasn't far off! The cabbage and other leafy green veggies are also used in other diets that are detoxifiers -- that means, they clean out your digestive system extremely effectively.

I wanted to add in a few other thoughts and tips for anyone considering this diet.

You may be surprised to find that I actually do recommend this diet, overall. This is a relatively effective short-term diet for people who want to drop 5 pounds before going on a vacation, or who are facing their high-school reunion, etc. and want to feel a little better. It does work, but the main thing to remember is that weight lost on the Cabbage Soup Diet will not stay off unless you change your lifestyle!

The Cabbage Soup Diet

1 large green pepper, diced or sliced

1 head celery, chopped

One half green cabbage, chopped

One can diced tomatoes

1 pack onion soup mix

3 vegetable bouillion cubes

8-12 cups of water (or more if desired)

*Optional - 1 8 oz. can V-8 juice

*Optional - 1 cup mushrooms, washed and sliced

*Optional - 1-2 cups washed fresh spinach leaves

*Optional seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, cilantro, parsley, basil, oregano, etc. (to taste)

Day One: All the soup you can eat, plus all the fresh fruit you can eat, except bananas. Watermelon and other high-water fruits are encouraged. You can drink unsweetened cranberry juice on day one as well.

Rapid Weight Loss – Cabbage Soup Diet: Lose 10 Pounds Fast

Are you ready to hear about a quick fix diet that has been helping people lose up to 10 pounds in a week ?

Not only that, this diet has staying power. It's a secret people have been using for decades to lose weight fast.

It used to be called the Model's Diet.

The best part is:

It's cheap and super healthy.

In today's post, I'll list each step for losing weight with the Cabbage Soup Diet

If you’re reading this guide right now, chances are you need to lose weight and lose it fast.

If that’s the case, please tell me you’re not reading this while gorging on a bag of processed junk food. If you are eating something you have no business eating, please A) dispose of it and B) consider the back of your head smacked.

The Best Diet No One's Talking About

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a quick fix solution and considered by many to be a bit of a miracle that can help people lose up to 10 pounds in a single week.

When someone first mentioned The Cabbage Soup Diet to me, my first thought was that this was NOT something that I would ever want to try. However, I am not completely opposed to cabbage, and other diets haven't worked for me so eventually I did give this one a try. It is an amazing diet plan that really works.

After its popularity in the 1950s, the cabbage soup diet was forgotten for a time, but then revived in the early 1980s as the Dolly Parton Diet, Trans World Airlines (TWA) Stewardess Diet, and the Model’s Diet.

No doubt these modern monikers were given to the diet because it was known that models, actresses and flight attendants back in the day would have periodic weight check-ins and, if they were overweight, risked losing their jobs.

Here's the long and the short of it:

1. It’s dirt cheap

You'll spend a few dollars on inexpensive vegetables (cabbage being the vegetable most used) and throw them into a pot and making soup, so anyone on any kind of budget can give this diet a try. You could say it’s a souper cheap way to lose weight.

2. Nutrient Rich

Cabbage doesn’t get the love and respect it deserves as a superfood. It’s a very healthy vegetable that offers a ton of vitamin C (F *ck off scurvy) and a lot of fiber. You'll see in a minute why the high fiber content is so important.

Nutritional Value of Cabbage Soup Diet

Amount Per Pot of Soup

Dietary Fiber 27g; 108%

Vitamin A 80% Vitamin C 586% Calcium 47% Iron 34% Magnesium 35% Potassium 58% Protein 31% Copper 21%

3. Cabbage Fills You Up

Satiety is the feeling of fullness after a meal and the feeling that lasts between meals. Satiating foods increase the feeling of fullness make the feeling last longer.

Eating low calorie foods that make you feel full is one of the secrets naturally skinny people use to fight cravings and eat less overall.

It's not known exactly why high fiber foods, such as cabbage, increase satiety. Most scientists agree the slower process of digestion of these foods trick your body into feeling full longer.

Many studies have confirmed the importance of highly filling foods for appetite control. This one combined the results of multiple studies to conclude that by eating more fiber, people do eat few calories and they burn more fat. It seems that by adding 14 grams of fiber for 2 or more days people reduced calorie intake by 10%.

You can see in the Nutritional Value section above that you'll be adding almost double this amount of fiber per batch of soup.

The people in the study weren't actively trying to cut calories.

It happened naturally because they weren't as hungry.

4. Works as a Cleanse

Fiber not only helps you feel fuller, if you often have trouble “going” – you’ll probably have an easier time of it this week and find your intestinal tract cleared and cleansed. Win/win, no?

A study published in the Lancet showed a 69% increase in the weight of bowel movements on a cabbage diet.

This might be gross, but:

It kind of makes you wonder how long that extra stuff had been in there before the cabbage came along to carry it out.

Be careful because the diet is not something that you should continue for a long time. In fact it is more of a cleanse than a diet. But, I happen to have lost 15 lbs on the diet myself. so I am a believer.

5. It'a a Whole Food Detox

The cabbage soup diet is a form of intermittent fasting that gives your body a break from all of the usual processed garbage you shovel into it.

On this diet, you spend 3 days or more replacing crap with pure whole food--the kind that comes straight from the earth.

After a week of eating whole foods, your body feel refreshed and renewed as it has time to adapt to an absence of the many toxins it usually receives on a daily basis. Many people report a diminished cravings for sugar and refined carbs.

6. A Form of Intermittent Fasting

Starve a little to lose a lot.

You may have heard of the eat, fast, eat diet--or any other diet that relies on fasting as a means of calorie reduction.

The cabbage soup diet is a quick and dirty version of an intermittent fasting diet.

Fasting diets are scientifically proven to help you lose weight and improve health:

You can read more about it here. If you wanted to keep up the weight loss over a long period, do the Cabbage Soup Diet just one a day a week for as long as you like after you complete the initial phase.

7. It's Simple.

You can make a whole batch of the soup and store it in your refrigerator and just heat it up for later. This is so much more convenient than having to, say, juice fruits and veggies three times a day and clean the juicer each time.

Are You Up to the Task?

The Cabbage Soup Diet works for the person who just can’t seem to stick to any diet for any real length of time.

We’re a society of instant gratification hounds, and you KNOW you’re one of them. Most diets require you to be on them for four to six weeks before you see any real results.

Although the Cabbage Soup Diet is NOT intended as a long-term solution, what’s great is that by losing significant and noticeable weight in one week, you’re much more motivated to get into shape. It’s the perfect jumping off point for true long-term lifestyle changes.

This persons swears by it for long term with success:

I have been on the cabbage soup diet for a year (on and off). I've done it about six times and I've lost over thirty pounds. I do NOT like cabbage or most vegetables, for that matter. But, I bought a blender, blend it up REAL well and I drink it. I'm used to it, now.

The other person who this diet is perfect for:

The person who really doesn’t give a rat’s a** about making lifestyle changes, they just desperately need to lose 10 pounds in a week so they can fit into their bridesmaid dress and avoid armpit fat rolls.

The Original Cabbage Soup Recipe

The original 1950s Cabbage Soup recipe is basically the same one used today. The only real variant of today’s recipe is that the soup is cooked less. While the original called for cooking the soup for a full hour, an amount of time that would essentially destroy all of the nutrients in the cabbage and other veggies, the newer version suggests cooking the soup for only 20 to 30 minutes after being brought to a boil.

You can eat as much soup as you want at any time during the day.

The ingredients:

  • 1 Green Pepper
  • 1 Large Can Diced Tomatoes
  • 6 Stalks Celery
  • 1 Large Onion - Chopped
  • 1-2 Cubes of Bouillon (if desired)
  • 1 head cabbage. A nice, big green one.
  • 48 oz. of V-8 Juice (low sodium works best)
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil (do not splurge here)
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (or to taste)

The first thing you’ll want to do is rinse all the veggie in the sink and they chop them into bite-size pieces.

Next, heat the olive oil in a pan and then add the onion to saute for a couple of minutes until the onions start to sweat. Add your celery and pepper and saute those with the onion for another 4 to 5 minutes.

Step Three

Pour in your water and V-8 Juice, bouillon cube, hot sauce and tomatoes. Bring all of it to a boil and then reduce it to a simmer until your veggies are tender (about 15 minutes if you chopped your veggies into smaller pieces).

Next, core your cabbage, then shred it, add it to your pot, and cook your soup for another 10 minutes. Adding the cabbage at the end of your cooking time preserves some of its nutritional value and keeps your house from smelling like a port-o-potty.

7 Day Cabbage Diet Plan

Fruit Day: On your first day you can eat as much fruit as you’d like (except for bananas). When you don’t feel like any more fruit but you’re hungry, have your soup. Only fruit and soup today.

Vegetable Day: Today you can eat as many vegetables as you can handle, and they may be raw or steamed. You should really try and avoid peas, corn and beans but eat a lot of leafy greens. So today have as much soup and veggies as you want. And for dinner you may chow down on a big, baked potato with oil, or butter if that's your thing.

Day 1 and Day 2 combo: Today you’re basically going to eat all the fruit (still no bananas though) and vegetables and soup you want, but no potato at dinner.

You Can Finally Eat Bananas Day: Today’s a fun day because you can eat AS MANY BANANAS as you want today. You can also have as many glasses of skim milk as you’d like. And of course throughout the day eat as much soup as you want.

Get Your Protein And Tomatoes On: Today the diet calls for a piece of beef or chicken that is 10 to 20 ounces. You can substitute with anything high protein, as long as it's not too starchy or sugary. You can also up to six fresh tomatoes. Putting ketchup on your beef does not count for fresh tomatoes. It’s also very important today that you drink 6 to 8 glasses of water to eliminate the uric acid from your body. Your soup should be eaten as often as you’d like.

More Protein and Vegetables. (You may also feel free to substitute broiled fish for one of your protein days but not for both.) Eat as much protein (seriously have 3 porterhouse steak if you’d like), veggies and soup as you feel like today. Try to eat a good amount of leafy greens today but no baked potato!

Unsweetened fruit juices, vegetables, and brown rice: You know the drill, you can stuff your face with as much of these items, and of course your soup today.

So… You Say You’d Like to Make Some Substitutions

The key to being successful with the Cabbage Soup Diet is to really not stray from the recipe or weekly meal plan. Having said that, there are a few substitutions you may experiment with if you get bored or don’t like another particular food item.

A number of other high fiber vegetables may be added to the soup for a bit more flavor, as long as they are lower in calories. For instance, adding corn or carrots would not be a good substitution because they are both sugary vegetables with too many calories.

Veggies like zuchinni, spinach, and kale are acceptable substitutes. You may even add one can of black beans to the pot for a bit of added flavor, texture and protein. To change up the flavor, stick to herbs and seasonings like cayenne, curry powder or bay leaves.

Maximize Your Weight Loss

As we mentioned a bit earlier, cabbage is full of fiber, making you feel full on this diet. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), raw cabbage contains only 20 calories per 31/2 ounces. Heck, you’ll practically burn that off just from chewing.

The shorter cooking time helps to alleviate the bitterness of raw cabbage without destroying the dietary fiber and nutrients.

The bottom line is:

The more you can fill up on this nutritious and low-calorie soup, the more weight you will lose.

The DOs and DON’Ts of the Cabbage Soup Diet

DON’T ever feel hungry during your weeklong diet. The whole point is for you to eat AS MUCH soup and other allotted foods on the appropriate day. Anyone who says the Cabbage Soup Diet is a starvation diet is an idiot and you can tell them we said so. If you’re feeling hungry, you’re not following directions, and if you don’t follow directions you won’t get the results you want. Capiche?

DON’T add salt to your foods; not to your soup or veggies or baked potato or tomatoes or protein source, etc. This includes table salt, sea salt, salt substitutes and seasoned salt.

DON’T drink anything but water. And drink a ton of it . Remember the cleanse aspect of this diet, where your digestive tract gets cleared out? Without a lot of water, you'll just feel bloated and constipated. The extra waste won't make it's way out and you'll be worse off than when you started.

You’ll notice there are some versions of this diet online where you have the option of drinking cranberry juice and V-8 juice instead of water. All we’re saying is, if you want to lose 10 pounds instead of 9, you’ll want to shave off as many calories as you can, and water has zero calories.

DON’T get creative with the soup recipe unless you're using one of our alternatives. Recipes were made to be followed. You may think adding another cup of carrots won’t hurt but carrots contain a lot of sugar and therefor calories.

DO enjoy your coffee and tea during the weak so as to avoid any awful caffeine withdrawal headaches but ;

DON’T add your usual sugar and creamer. For a bonus pack of antioxidants, we recommend this matcha green tea. It's better than a vitamin. Black coffee and tea has very minimal calories so you’re alright there.

They take that very slow and steady approach to weight loss and most people want faster results.

The weight loss is so slow that most people get discouraged and quit before they ever see any true results.

The very reason why people love the Cabbage Soup Diet so much is because real weight loss, which you can see with your own eyes, happens in only 7 days. And that weight loss propels people into a more long-term solution that can bring about even greater weight loss and a radical positive shift in their overall health.

Maximize the Weight Loss

You're probably wondering:

Will this actually work?

Here are a few final tips on how you can make sure you are successful with this simple yet very effective diet:

· Follow the diet to the proverbial letter. Listen, just because you’ve had an English muffin every morning for breakfast for the past four years doesn’t mean you can have them this week.

You only need to commit to seven days – it’s really not that much to ask of yourself. If you feel it is, you will never lose weight.

· Don’t forget to drink a lot of water on this diet to help flush out your system and keep you full.

· Make sure to make plenty of soup so you can store it and easily heat it when you get hungry. That’s really key, having that soup always ready to go.

· Don’t go out that week to bars and restaurants with friends and family or you’re just asking for trouble. You can fool yourself into thinking you have enough willpower to NOT eat a whole bowl of chips and salsa by yourself, but if that were the case, you wouldn’t be trying to lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time in the first place. It’s only 1 week, suck it up.

You now have all of the information you could possibly need to lose up to 10 pounds in one week. Basically it’s up to you now. The only thing stopping your from sweet victory is yourself. How bad do you want this? How bad do you want to fit into those jeans or that bathing suit? How bad do you want to walk past a store window and LOVE the reflection you see? If you want it bad enough, you can have it, and the Cabbage Soup Diet can give it to you.

The GM Diet for 2017: General Motors Weight Loss Plan

When a diet works exactly the way you hoped it would, you almost think there's magic in it.

According to our research, there are 3 keys to weight loss with a diet. This one has them all.

Yes. It’s what you think it is.

An eating plan developed by General Motors—the car company.

At first, the editors at SkinnyBitch were completely turned off by the concept of a car diet, but it works. It will get you skinny.

And it can work very fast, when done correctly.

Reported weight loss is between 10 and 17 pounds per week.

We wouldn’t waste your time if this diet didn’t produce great results—even if we would prefer an exotic sports car diet instead.

The General Motors diet was originally created as a way for GM employees to lose weight quickly and efficiently.

Rumor has it that GM officials collaborated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), with testing taking place at the Johns Hopkins Research Center.

One thing is for sure:

This car company was serious about weight loss.

Research entailed designing a wellness program that would cleanse the body of toxins while experiencing a change in emotions and attitudes.

It would also lead to feeling healthier while getting skinnier.

The GM diet is based on the principle that by eating only the foods in the eating plan, the body will burn more calories than the food provides.

The imbalanced equation of calories in vs. calories out prevents the storage of body fat and forces the body to burn fat for energy. This is called caloric deficit. 1

Reported weight loss is between 10 and 17 pounds per week and is very effective. If skinniness is your goal, this diet could have you looking hot by next weekend.

The Best Part Of This Diet:

The cleansing systematic effects of the General Motors diet make it possible to lose a tremendous amount of weight quickly.

The best part of the GM Diet plan is that it helps get you into the habit of eating more fresh fruits and vegetables when you transition into your regular eating habits, preventing you from gaining weight back.

You actually feel lighter (both physically and emotionally) after just one week.

The diet can give you an abundance of energy and improved mood.

GM Diet Reviews: What People are Saying

The 7-Day Meal Plan: It's Easy

Before you begin, the best way you can prepare yourself for the GM diet is by making sure you have plenty of pure, clean water to drink every single day.

This is an important aspect of the diet that cannot be overlooked.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will keep you energized and boost your metabolism.

It will also help prevent fatigue, any muscle pain or weakness, or increased body heat that can come with shedding pounds so quickly.

The worst part is:

You must avoid alcohol altogether for the entire week. Not even a skinny martini.

Alcohol can trigger fluid retention and prevent the body from flushing out excess liquids in your body. The diet is meticulously designed to get results.

Don’t mess with it or you won’t get the promised outcome.

Day # 1 –Consume only fruits throughout the day. You can eat all fruit other than bananas. Good choices include melon and watermelon. Drink plenty of water. Another option is to place a variety of fruit in a blender and pour in a thermos. This works great if you are headed out to work, school, the gym or wherever.

Day # 2 – Eat all the raw or cooked vegetables you can consume. You may start your day with a baked potato for breakfast with oil or butter. You can enjoy all your vegetables as a salad and use white or wine vinegar, lemon and herbs for flavoring. Do NOT use salad dressing. You’ll blow the whole diet.

Day # 3 – Combine both fruits and vegetables in any amount without bananas or potatoes. Fruits and vegetables can be combined in a blender as well for a quick way to consume them on the go.

Day # 4 – Milk and bananas are the choices for the day. Eat as many as 8 bananas and drink at least 3 glasses of any kind of unsweetened milk. The potassium in the bananas and the calcium in the milk are a key part of this diet. This is the day you can enjoy the special soup along with your bananas and milk. Most likely, you will not be able to eat all 8 bananas in one day.

Day # 5 - Enjoy a celebration meal of beef and tomatoes that includes two 10-ounce portions of lean meat or hamburger with six whole tomatoes. It is important to increase your water intake to help your body get rid of the uric acid that you will be producing on this day. Aim for an increase of water by one quart.

Day # 6 – On this day, you can consume unlimited amounts of high, lean protein and vegetables.

Day # 7 – Whew! The last day consists of eating all the vegetables you can consume, fruit juices and brown rice. No meat. Make sure the fruit juice is not from a concentrate or bottled with added sugar. If you have access to a juicer, the sky is the limit with creating your fruit juices.

On day number eight, you can be at least 10 pounds lighter and may even lose considerably more than that, up to about 17 pounds.

If you are not yet as skinny as you want to be, repeat the meal plans again or as often as you like.

The good news is:

After the first week, you can enjoy a glass or two of white wine or even a celebratory glass of champagne.

Alternatively, you can have a beer but those are the only options.

Do not drink any type of alcohol such as vodka, run or bourbon.

The thorough research conducted for the GM diet found that all other forms of liquor are detrimental to the results.

Cream drinks are not allowed either.

GM Diet’s Special Soup

You're probably wondering:

How would this work?

Starting on day 4, you can eat whenever you feel hungry.

The designers of the diet knew it was much more likely to succeed if people didn’t feel like they had to starve themselves.

You can do anything for three days.

The will power begins to break down. That’s where the special soup comes into play.

Starting on day 4:

The soup can be eaten any time of day in unlimited quantities.

It is intended to supplement your eating plan so you do not have to feel guilty for eating it.

You can even pig out on it.

Eat as much of this soup as you want.

Feel free to substitute any of the vegetables for ones you prefer.

GM Diet Soup Recipe

In a large stockpot, add:

6 large onions – chopped

3 ½ cups of water

2 red peppers – chopped

4 whole tomatoes

1 head of cabbage – roughly chopped

1 bunch of celery – roughly chopped

Herbs of your choice

Bring all ingredients to boil; simmer over low heat for 30-45 minutes until veggies are soft but not mushy.

Beverages To Consume

While you are on the program, you may consume the following:

· Water – can be flavored with lemon or lime

· Club soda is all

· Black Coffee – no cream or sugar

· Tea – herbal or black

Do not consume anything else like soft drinks, sport drinks or any of the endless flavored beverages in your local market. No fruit juices are allowed until meal day # 7.

When it comes to fruit juices:

Squeeze your own and avoid those with artificial sweeteners, preservatives and additives.

Vegan/ Vegetarian Method

When General Motors developed the GM diet, they weren’t thinking about all the future vegans and vegetarians that would be roaming the planet in need of weight loss. It just so happens that the diet works very well for vegans and vegetarians anyway.

It’s very easy to modify the diet plan.

The first four days of the GM diet plan involve eating only fruits and vegetables.

However, beginning on the fifth day, the eating plan asks you to eat beef with your vegetables.

If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can substitute brown rice for beef.

Other vegetarian options for protein in place of beef include tofu or chickpeas.

Beans such as kidney beans or lima beans are high in calories and should be avoided for the week of the GM diet.

Advantages Of The GM Diet Plan

The main purpose of the General Motors diet is to gain a healthy body and lose weight in the process.

Instead of dragging it out for weeks or months, GM developed a diet that would allow people to drop weight in just a week.

You can expect to see significant weight loss, natural glowing skin, more energy and elimination of toxins. If follow this diet to the letter, you will love the results.

Before you begin, make sure you are healthy enough for an aggressive diet. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor first, especially if you are taking any medication.

The Importance Of Exercise

None of us can get around this one:

Skinny bitches have to exercise.

The key is finding something you actually enjoy doing, whether it is weight-training at the gym, taking a yoga class or simply committing to a daily walk.

You don’t have to kill yourself with a workout to see impressive results.

We've recommended this in several posts, and it's worth repeating:

We know they work.

You'll be surprised at the motivation you feel to keep moving when your device is tracking it.

If that doesn't sound appealing, check out our own SkinnyGym for workouts on your mobile device.

Whatever it is, physical activity can significantly boost your basal metabolic rate, meaning the number of calories your body burns naturally.

Exercise that makes you sweat is a good thing.

Exercise also helps your body regulate the amount of insulin released into your bloodstream. Insulin’s job is to metabolize blood sugar into energy.

However, too much insulin can keep your body from burning stored fat.

Your pancreas produces insulin for you, and if it becomes overworked, it can literally turn in its notice and can lead you to developing Type 2 diabetes.

Burning more calories than you consume can significantly reduce your risk of developing this disease.

Exercise also happens to be one of the best ways to slow down the aging process from the inside out.

Exercise is better than botox at keeping you looking young and vibrant.

You can become a disease-free, healthier, fit and stronger person through exercise.

The Science Behind The GM Diet

The GM diet relies on clean foods and calorie restriction.

Better digestion, regular bowel movements and weight loss are a result of regular detoxification that occurs through the GM diet. The foods consumed are low in sugar and high in fiber.

The many fruits and vegetables, which are more easily absorbed in the digestive tract, speed up digestion.

The increase in water intake helps the body digest all the fiber and dissolve the nutrients.

Drinking more water also helps the digestive system become more efficient.

The GM diet allows you to use up reserved energy (fat) while absorbing potent nutrients and boosting your metabolism.

The high fiber in the GM diet helps remove the excess waste easier and more regularly, improving your digestive system in the process.

All of the above allow the body to lose excess body fat for faster weight loss.

The General Motor's Diet Is:

· Lower in salt and sugar

· Higher in complex carbohydrates and fiber

· Reduces serum cholesterol levels

· Decreases the risk for insulin resistance and diabetes

· Helps you lose weight efficiently

· Reduces the risk of hypertension

You may experience some side effects such as a headache, irritability, cramping, dizziness or excessive thirst.

In order to ensure success of staying on track throughout the week, eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible, drink plenty of water throughout the day and exercise.

Dos And Don’ts Of The GM Diet

Are you ready to take on the GM diet?

You will be able to experience quick and efficient weight loss in one week and enjoy feeling lighter, more energized and healthier.

Here are some dos and don’ts for success:

Enjoy the vegetables in a salad form, if desired

Choose the vegetables you like and are a pleasure for you to eat

Enjoy the soup in unlimited quantities starting on day 4 and beyond

Use white or wine vinegar, lemon, garlic or herbs for added flavorings

Substitute any vegetable in the GM soup recipe that you like

Do not use more than one teaspoon of oil on the vegetables

Do not use salad dressing

Avoid beans such as kidney, pinto, lima beans, etc. as they are high in starch and calories

Do not skip any of the days of the diet as this can trigger extra, unwanted pounds. Remember, the steps of this diet were created specifically for results.

It is important to follow the regimen in a chronological and sequential manner. Cheating or skipping any of the meal day requirements may cause the eating plan to be ineffective and could even cause you to gain weight instead of lose weight. Any time you make a change in your eating habits, you can experience discomfort. However, it be minimized by exercising daily, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep. Here’s to your future skinny self!

The GM Diet: Day 1 – Day 7 in Detail

The 7-Day weight loss program developed by General Motors involves eating only fruits and vegetables the first three days of the plan. The foods you will eat are high in fiber, with less protein, fats and carbohydrates. The high fiber is designed to accelerate your bowel activity and detox your body.

If you are dedicated to the plan, you can lose 10 to 17 pounds in one week. You will feel and look lighter, more energized and motivated to add more fruits and vegetables into your regular eating plan after the week is over.

It’s Time To Get Specific

The first day of the program is critical for success and you should not deviate from it whatsoever. In order to prepare yourself for the first day, you need to focus on fruit and nothing else. Avoid bananas and choose fruits that are low in starch, sugar, potassium or carbohydrates. Also, plan on drinking lots of water, at least 8-10 glasses each day to stay hydrated. In fact, it is a good idea to get in the habit of drinking more water each day before you start the GM diet.

Take a look at the following list of fruits that are lowest, low-to medium and highest in sugar. Aim for the low to medium sugar fruits for best results from your week on the GM diet.

Low-Sugar Fruits

Low Sugar Fruits

Berries, rhubarb, lemon and lime – are low in carbohydrates, fat and calories but high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. They have also been shown to help prevent cancer and heart disease as well as slowing down the aging process.

Low-To-Medium Sugar Fruits

Apples, Blueberries, Grapefruit, Guava, Melon, Nectarine, Papaya, Peach, Strawberries, Watermelon

Fairly High-Sugar Fruits

Kiwi, Oranges, Pears, Plums, Pineapple,

Very-High Sugar Fruits

Bananas, Cherries, Figs, Grapes, Dried Fruit, Mango, Pomegranate, Tangerines

Let’s take a look at a Sample Meal Plan for Day 1 on the GM Diet. Choose fruits from the low-to-medium sugar fruits. Good choices are apples, kiwi, melon, oranges, papaya and watermelon. Remember, no bananas.

Day # 1 GM Diet Sample Eating Plan

Breakfast: 1 apple with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Morning: 1 bowl of kiwi or raw papaya and 2 glasses of water

Lunch: 1 bowl of melon with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Afternoon: 1 bowl of oranges or raw papaya with 2 glasses of water

Dinner: 1 bowl of oranges or watermelon with 2 glasses of water

Evening Snack: 1 glass of coconut water

The first day may be a bit difficult, however if you can’t control your cravings, snack on apple slices, oranges or raisins. Take heart, once you are past the first day, it does get easier. If you get bored with drinking only water, you can enjoy fresh-squeezed orange juice or coconut water. However limit your servings to only 2 glasses per day. The main purpose of day 1 is to cleanse your body’s digestive system and boost your metabolism so that it will be easier to lose more pounds over the next few days.

Preparing For Day # 2

Day 2’s eating plan is similar to day 1 except you only eat vegetables. There really is no limit to the vegetable choices and you can eat all varieties. Eating vegetables throughout day 2 will increase you fiber intake and helps regulate the sugar content from all the fruit you ate on day 1. You should feel much better on day 2 as you can have almost any vegetable including a potato that is high in starch. Plus, you should have more energy to engage in physical exercise including something more strenuous like this popular HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). HIIT allows you to burn more calories in less time by performing more strenuous exercises such as push-ups, lunges, squats and plank.

For breakfast, you can enjoy a large boiled potato that will fill you up and give you energy for the rest of the day. You can enjoy a sweet potato instead, if you prefer. For lunch, make a huge salad with your favorite lettuce, cabbage and cucumbers. You can add white or wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. For dinner, think about asparagus, broccoli, cabbage and beets with vinegar.

Day # 2 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: 1 cup of boiled potato or sweet potato with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Morning Snack: 1 bowl of raw red lettuce or bibb lettuce with vinegar with 2 glasses of water

Lunch: Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and beets in vinegar with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Afternoon Snack: 1 cup of Cherry tomatoes with 2 glasses of water

Dinner: Steamed asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower with 2 glasses of water

NO fruit whatsoever on day 2. Since the focus is on vegetables only on day 2, it is a good day to make the GM soup so you can enjoy it whenever you want to or feel hungry. Do not add any oil when cooking.

Preparing For Day # 3

Once you have completed day 1 and 2 eating plans on the GM diet, you will find the meal plan on day 3 much easier. On day 3, you will be able to eat both fruits and vegetables, without bananas or potatoes. However, your body is prepared now to shed those excess calories and though you may have some light food cravings but those will lessen significantly by day 4.

When it comes to breakfast on day 3, choose between watermelon or apples but not both at the same time. Repeat the same lunch plan from day # 2 and add some fruit to it. Dinner can be a combination of any vegetables as long as they are boiled or steamed and of course, you may add some fruit to the mix such as melon or apple. Snack on fruit and vegetables all day and drink plenty of water.

Day # 3 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: Enjoy 1 cup of diced melon or 1 apple with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Morning: 1 bowl of papaya and cantaloupe with 2 glasses of water

Lunch: Salad with Romaine lettuce, tomato and cucumber with beets in vinegar and 2 glasses of water

Mid-Afternoon Snack: 1 mango or orange with 2 glasses of water

Dinner: 1 bowl of fresh greens with broccoli and raw papaya and 2 glasses of water

By now, you should notice a weight loss of about two to four pounds that is a positive effect of the GM diet. Remember to not drink any fruit juices until day # 7. For best results, eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Enjoy the GM soup made with water and your favorite vegetables such as tomatoes and cabbage.

Preparing For Day # 4

Whew! You made it to day # 4 and the good news is you can now eat bananas. During day 1, 2 and 3, you have cleansed your body and have had time to adjust to the GM diet. Your body has received all the fiber and sugars from all the fruits and vegetables. By adding milk and bananas to your eating plan on day # 4, you will get all the sodium and potassium you were not getting during the beginning of the eating plan. You will feel energized by eating the GM soup, milk and bananas and notice some changes in your appearance that go will beyond the slimming effects of wearing Spanx.

On day # 4, start your day with a glass of milk and banana – you can blend the two together, if you prefer. Use skim milk for best results. Enjoy the GM vegetable soup and you can add another milkshake of banana and skim milk. If you find that you are full after eating the vegetable soup, you can skip the milkshake. For snacks, you should only have skim and banana or make a milkshake.

Day # 4 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: 1 glass of skim milk and 1 banana with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Morning Snack: 1 glass of milk and 2 bananas with 2 glasses of water

Lunch: a bowl of tomato and cabbage soup with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Afternoon: Skim milk and banana shake with 1 glass of water

Dinner: enjoy a bowl of vegetable soup and one banana with 2 glasses of water

If you experience any food cravings on day # 4, eat a banana or blend it with a glass of skim milk and ice in a blender for a milkshake. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Blending 2 bananas and 2 glasses of skim milk with ice makes a smoothie that you can pour into a thermos to take with you to work or when you are on the go.

When it comes to making the soup, use a large stockpot and add a cup each of your favorite vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, celery, onions and peppers. You can season the soup with Himalayan Pink Sea Salt and pepper. Himalayan Pink Sea Salt will not elevate blood pressure and is loaded with a balance of minerals.

Preparing For Day # 5

Congratulations on making it to day # 5. The past four days of the GM diet lacked protein and you may have noticed some muscle weakness, however on day # 5, you are only allowed to eat beef and tomatoes. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you can substitute the beef for brown rice or tofu. Not a fan of beef? You can substitute chicken or 6 eggs for the beef. However, beef contain protein and iron, and the tomatoes contain lycopene and plenty of fiber that your body needs.

It is a good idea to eat small servings of beef throughout your day as large servings can make your appetite worse. Of course, combine the beef with the tomatoes at each meal on day # 5. For example, you can start your day with tomato soup and braised beef that will provide protein, fiber and energy for your day.

A hamburger with tomato only will work for lunch but drink plenty of water to flush out the uric acid your body will produce from all the beef. Enjoy beef soup and tomatoes with plenty of water when it is time for a snack. No fruit juices allowed. If you do not like red meat, you can make a turkey burger or use chicken instead of the beef. Make sure it is skinless chicken breast and use all-white turkey meat for making the turkey hamburgers.

(You can substitute the beef for any meat or plant based protein)

Zest of one lemon

1 cup of beef tenderloin strips

1 teaspoon of ground coriander

Himalayan Pink Sea salt and pepper to taste

Season the meat, chicken or turkey meat with the lemon zest by rubbing it all over the meat. Let stand for at least 10 minutes. Season with coriander, sea salt and pepper to taste – place on grill or griddle and cook at least 4-5 minutes on each side, depending on thickness. Remove and serve with sliced tomatoes.

Day # 5 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: braised beef and sliced tomatoes

Mid-Morning: turkey patty and tomato

Lunch: Hamburger patty and sliced tomato

Mid-Afternoon: turkey patty and tomato

Dinner: hamburger patty and tomato

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out the uric acid your body will produce with all the meat consumed. No fruit juices. You should notice a difference in how much lighter you feel due to the first three days of cleansing and detoxification. Your skin should be glowing by now from eating all those fruits and vegetables.

Prepare For Day # 6

Protein and fiber is the name of the game on day # 6. It is considered a feast day because you can now add vegetables to your protein choices on this day. By this day, you should notice significant weight loss and a different in how you feel. Make note of how you feel before, during and after exercise.

Day # 6 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: Bowl of vegetable soup with lean beef strips

Mid-Morning: leafy green salad with cooked lean beef or chicken strips on top

Lunch: Beef and vegetables – no potatoes or bread

Mid-Afternoon: leafy green salad with cooked lean beef or chicken strips on top

Dinner: beef patty or chicken breast with a bowl of vegetable soup

You should notice that your appetite is at a normal level and cravings for any sugar are gone. Eat vegetables and lean meats for your snack and drink plenty of water.

Congratulations on making it to day # 7. You should see significant weight loss and feel and look great. Weight loss should be at least 10 pounds and you should also notice that you are sleeping better with glowing skin and an improved digestive system.

Day # 7 Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast: brown rice or oatmeal and melon with 2 glasses of water

Mid-Morning: 1 cup of sliced strawberries

Lunch: Cooked vegetables and mango

Mid-Afternoon: 1 cup of blueberries and raspberries

Dinner: Brown rice and vegetables of your choice

Snack Before Bed: 1 cup of strawberries

Of course, continue to drink water throughout the day and into the evening, before going to bed. Make sure you continue to exercise to boost your metabolism and continue to burn more calories. You can repeat the GM diet as often as you like or until you reach your weight loss goal. However, maintain at least one-week break or interval before starting on the GM diet again. The GM Diet is designed for those who need to lose weight and want to see results quickly. The benefit of the GM diet is to get you into the habit of eating more fresh fruits and vegetables throughout your day. Here is to happy, healthy eating.
