Fans claim you can drop 10 pounds or more in a week. Some people use it to kick-start their weight loss plan, or to trim a few pounds for a special event.
But before you stock up on cabbage, know that this crash diet won't help you in the long run, and it doesn't give your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
What You Can Eat
Just like the name says, the bulk of this diet is fat-free cabbage soup, eaten two to three times a day with other allowed foods assigned each day. Here's what you can add:
- Day 1: Fruit, except bananas
- Day 2: Vegetables like leafy greens (not starchy), but no fruit
- Day 3: Fruits and vegetables
- Day 4: Bananas and skim milk
- Day 5: Beef (or baked chicken without the skin) and tomatoes
- Day 6: Beef and vegetables
- Day 7: Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables
There are different recipes for the soup, which is recommended every day of the diet. They all have similar ingredients, such as tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and bouillon.

Limitations: Your menu options are severely limited on this diet. It gets very boring, very quickly. If you want to try it again, it's recommended that you wait 2 weeks first.
Cooking and shopping: Get out your soup pot. You will need to make the cabbage soup and cook some of the vegetables recommended in the plan. Your shopping list will be very short for the week.

Though this diet is fast, cheap, and simple, it's not easy to stick with. It will likely leave you feeling hungry, weak, and bored. You might even feel sick. And if you follow the Cabbage Soup Diet for more than a week, you could run short on key nutrients.
Nor does the diet encourage the necessary lifestyle changes you need to make in order to be healthier and have lasting weight loss.
The drastic weight loss you might experience with The Cabbage Soup Diet can cause health problems and can be dangerous even when it’s done under a doctor’s supervision.

A few years ago, the Hollywood Grapefruit Diet hit the scene with ads screaming how you could lose 10 pounds in two days. Who could resist? But long before the Hollywood Grapefruit Diet, there was The Cabbage Soup Diet, with claims of dramatic weight loss as well. Does it work? What does it contain? What else should you know?
This is a short-term diet, intended to be followed for one (maximum of two) weeks. The general premise is that you consume unlimited quantities of a soup made of a variety of vegetables, primarily cabbage and other extremely low-calorie high-fiber veggies, every day. You also get a few other specific foods that you are allowed to eat each day, but these vary day to day.
This is a specific diet, like the Atkins Diet, where specific items are included and others are not allowed at all. Substitutions within a food group are allowed; however, you must eat the soup every day and you must consume some of the other items each day. Since each day has a different list of "allowed" items, it's important to review the list before beginning the diet. For example, on day one, you can eat all the fruits you want. Watery fruits such as melons are encouraged, as they help flush your system out; bananas are not allowed.
Of course the bottom line is, does it work? Well, honestly, I am sad to say that it does indeed work. I say "saddened" because this is a short-cut diet. It does not force the dieter to change their lifestyle, nor does it provide any lasting effects. Depending on your activity level and your starting weight, you will probably lose between 4 and 10 pounds on this diet in the first week.
Are there any side effects? Yes -- several, including significant flatulence and loose bowel movements in most people as the soup flushes out your system. My sister used to call this The Cabbage Poop Diet, and she wasn't far off! The cabbage and other leafy green veggies are also used in other diets that are detoxifiers -- that means, they clean out your digestive system extremely effectively.
I wanted to add in a few other thoughts and tips for anyone considering this diet.
You may be surprised to find that I actually do recommend this diet, overall. This is a relatively effective short-term diet for people who want to drop 5 pounds before going on a vacation, or who are facing their high-school reunion, etc. and want to feel a little better. It does work, but the main thing to remember is that weight lost on the Cabbage Soup Diet will not stay off unless you change your lifestyle!
The Cabbage Soup Diet
3 large onions, diced
1 large green pepper, diced or sliced
1 head celery, chopped
One half green cabbage, chopped
One can diced tomatoes
1 pack onion soup mix
3 vegetable bouillion cubes
8-12 cups of water (or more if desired)
*Optional - 1 8 oz. can V-8 juice
*Optional - 1 cup mushrooms, washed and sliced
*Optional - 1-2 cups washed fresh spinach leaves
*Optional seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, cilantro, parsley, basil, oregano, etc. (to taste)
Day One: All the soup you can eat, plus all the fresh fruit you can eat, except bananas. Watermelon and other high-water fruits are encouraged. You can drink unsweetened cranberry juice on day one as well.

After its popularity in the 1950s, the cabbage soup diet was forgotten for a time, but then revived in the early 1980s as the Dolly Parton Diet, Trans World Airlines (TWA) Stewardess Diet, and the Model’s Diet.
No doubt these modern monikers were given to the diet because it was known that models, actresses and flight attendants back in the day would have periodic weight check-ins and, if they were overweight, risked losing their jobs.

You'll spend a few dollars on inexpensive vegetables (cabbage being the vegetable most used) and throw them into a pot and making soup, so anyone on any kind of budget can give this diet a try. You could say it’s a souper cheap way to lose weight.

Cabbage doesn’t get the love and respect it deserves as a superfood. It’s a very healthy vegetable that offers a ton of vitamin C (F *ck off scurvy) and a lot of fiber. You'll see in a minute why the high fiber content is so important.

The Original Cabbage Soup Recipe
The original 1950s Cabbage Soup recipe is basically the same one used today. The only real variant of today’s recipe is that the soup is cooked less. While the original called for cooking the soup for a full hour, an amount of time that would essentially destroy all of the nutrients in the cabbage and other veggies, the newer version suggests cooking the soup for only 20 to 30 minutes after being brought to a boil.
You can eat as much soup as you want at any time during the day.
- 1 Green Pepper
- 1 Large Can Diced Tomatoes
- 6 Stalks Celery
- 1 Large Onion - Chopped
- 1-2 Cubes of Bouillon (if desired)
- 1 head cabbage. A nice, big green one.
- 48 oz. of V-8 Juice (low sodium works best)
- 4 cups of water
- 1 teaspoon of olive oil (do not splurge here)
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (or to taste)
The first thing you’ll want to do is rinse all the veggie in the sink and they chop them into bite-size pieces.
Next, heat the olive oil in a pan and then add the onion to saute for a couple of minutes until the onions start to sweat. Add your celery and pepper and saute those with the onion for another 4 to 5 minutes.
Pour in your water and V-8 Juice, bouillon cube, hot sauce and tomatoes. Bring all of it to a boil and then reduce it to a simmer until your veggies are tender (about 15 minutes if you chopped your veggies into smaller pieces).
Next, core your cabbage, then shred it, add it to your pot, and cook your soup for another 10 minutes. Adding the cabbage at the end of your cooking time preserves some of its nutritional value and keeps your house from smelling like a port-o-potty.
7 Day Cabbage Diet Plan
Fruit Day: On your first day you can eat as much fruit as you’d like (except for bananas). When you don’t feel like any more fruit but you’re hungry, have your soup. Only fruit and soup today.
Vegetable Day: Today you can eat as many vegetables as you can handle, and they may be raw or steamed. You should really try and avoid peas, corn and beans but eat a lot of leafy greens. So today have as much soup and veggies as you want. And for dinner you may chow down on a big, baked potato with oil, or butter if that's your thing.
Day 1 and Day 2 combo: Today you’re basically going to eat all the fruit (still no bananas though) and vegetables and soup you want, but no potato at dinner.
You Can Finally Eat Bananas Day: Today’s a fun day because you can eat AS MANY BANANAS as you want today. You can also have as many glasses of skim milk as you’d like. And of course throughout the day eat as much soup as you want.
Get Your Protein And Tomatoes On: Today the diet calls for a piece of beef or chicken that is 10 to 20 ounces. You can substitute with anything high protein, as long as it's not too starchy or sugary. You can also up to six fresh tomatoes. Putting ketchup on your beef does not count for fresh tomatoes. It’s also very important today that you drink 6 to 8 glasses of water to eliminate the uric acid from your body. Your soup should be eaten as often as you’d like.
More Protein and Vegetables. (You may also feel free to substitute broiled fish for one of your protein days but not for both.) Eat as much protein (seriously have 3 porterhouse steak if you’d like), veggies and soup as you feel like today. Try to eat a good amount of leafy greens today but no baked potato!
Unsweetened fruit juices, vegetables, and brown rice: You know the drill, you can stuff your face with as much of these items, and of course your soup today.
So… You Say You’d Like to Make Some Substitutions
The key to being successful with the Cabbage Soup Diet is to really not stray from the recipe or weekly meal plan. Having said that, there are a few substitutions you may experiment with if you get bored or don’t like another particular food item.
A number of other high fiber vegetables may be added to the soup for a bit more flavor, as long as they are lower in calories. For instance, adding corn or carrots would not be a good substitution because they are both sugary vegetables with too many calories.
Veggies like zuchinni, spinach, and kale are acceptable substitutes. You may even add one can of black beans to the pot for a bit of added flavor, texture and protein. To change up the flavor, stick to herbs and seasonings like cayenne, curry powder or bay leaves.

As we mentioned a bit earlier, cabbage is full of fiber, making you feel full on this diet. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), raw cabbage contains only 20 calories per 31/2 ounces. Heck, you’ll practically burn that off just from chewing.

The DOs and DON’Ts of the Cabbage Soup Diet
DON’T ever feel hungry during your weeklong diet. The whole point is for you to eat AS MUCH soup and other allotted foods on the appropriate day. Anyone who says the Cabbage Soup Diet is a starvation diet is an idiot and you can tell them we said so. If you’re feeling hungry, you’re not following directions, and if you don’t follow directions you won’t get the results you want. Capiche?
DON’T add salt to your foods; not to your soup or veggies or baked potato or tomatoes or protein source, etc. This includes table salt, sea salt, salt substitutes and seasoned salt.
DON’T drink anything but water. And drink a ton of it . Remember the cleanse aspect of this diet, where your digestive tract gets cleared out? Without a lot of water, you'll just feel bloated and constipated. The extra waste won't make it's way out and you'll be worse off than when you started.
You’ll notice there are some versions of this diet online where you have the option of drinking cranberry juice and V-8 juice instead of water. All we’re saying is, if you want to lose 10 pounds instead of 9, you’ll want to shave off as many calories as you can, and water has zero calories.
DON’T get creative with the soup recipe unless you're using one of our alternatives. Recipes were made to be followed. You may think adding another cup of carrots won’t hurt but carrots contain a lot of sugar and therefor calories.
DO enjoy your coffee and tea during the weak so as to avoid any awful caffeine withdrawal headaches but ;

Do not consume anything else like soft drinks, sport drinks or any of the endless flavored beverages in your local market. No fruit juices are allowed until meal day # 7.
When it comes to fruit juices:
Squeeze your own and avoid those with artificial sweeteners, preservatives and additives.

The main purpose of day 1 is to cleanse your body’s digestive system and boost your metabolism so that it will be easier to lose more pounds over the next few days.
Preparing For Day # 2
Day 2’s eating plan is similar to day 1 except you only eat vegetables. There really is no limit to the vegetable choices and you can eat all varieties. Eating vegetables throughout day 2 will increase you fiber intake and helps regulate the sugar content from all the fruit you ate on day 1. You should feel much better on day 2 as you can have almost any vegetable including a potato that is high in starch. Plus, you should have more energy to engage in physical exercise including something more strenuous like this popular HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). HIIT allows you to burn more calories in less time by performing more strenuous exercises such as push-ups, lunges, squats and plank.
For breakfast, you can enjoy a large boiled potato that will fill you up and give you energy for the rest of the day. You can enjoy a sweet potato instead, if you prefer. For lunch, make a huge salad with your favorite lettuce, cabbage and cucumbers. You can add white or wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. For dinner, think about asparagus, broccoli, cabbage and beets with vinegar.
Day # 2 Sample Meal Plan
Breakfast: 1 cup of boiled potato or sweet potato with 2 glasses of water
Mid-Morning Snack: 1 bowl of raw red lettuce or bibb lettuce with vinegar with 2 glasses of water
Lunch: Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and beets in vinegar with 2 glasses of water
Mid-Afternoon Snack: 1 cup of Cherry tomatoes with 2 glasses of water
Dinner: Steamed asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower with 2 glasses of water
NO fruit whatsoever on day 2. Since the focus is on vegetables only on day 2, it is a good day to make the GM soup so you can enjoy it whenever you want to or feel hungry. Do not add any oil when cooking.
Preparing For Day # 3
Once you have completed day 1 and 2 eating plans on the GM diet, you will find the meal plan on day 3 much easier. On day 3, you will be able to eat both fruits and vegetables, without bananas or potatoes. However, your body is prepared now to shed those excess calories and though you may have some light food cravings but those will lessen significantly by day 4.
When it comes to breakfast on day 3, choose between watermelon or apples but not both at the same time. Repeat the same lunch plan from day # 2 and add some fruit to it. Dinner can be a combination of any vegetables as long as they are boiled or steamed and of course, you may add some fruit to the mix such as melon or apple. Snack on fruit and vegetables all day and drink plenty of water.
Day # 3 Sample Meal Plan
Breakfast: Enjoy 1 cup of diced melon or 1 apple with 2 glasses of water
Mid-Morning: 1 bowl of papaya and cantaloupe with 2 glasses of water
Lunch: Salad with Romaine lettuce, tomato and cucumber with beets in vinegar and 2 glasses of water
Mid-Afternoon Snack: 1 mango or orange with 2 glasses of water
Dinner: 1 bowl of fresh greens with broccoli and raw papaya and 2 glasses of water
By now, you should notice a weight loss of about two to four pounds that is a positive effect of the GM diet. Remember to not drink any fruit juices until day # 7. For best results, eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Enjoy the GM soup made with water and your favorite vegetables such as tomatoes and cabbage.
Preparing For Day # 4
Whew! You made it to day # 4 and the good news is you can now eat bananas. During day 1, 2 and 3, you have cleansed your body and have had time to adjust to the GM diet. Your body has received all the fiber and sugars from all the fruits and vegetables. By adding milk and bananas to your eating plan on day # 4, you will get all the sodium and potassium you were not getting during the beginning of the eating plan. You will feel energized by eating the GM soup, milk and bananas and notice some changes in your appearance that go will beyond the slimming effects of wearing Spanx.
On day # 4, start your day with a glass of milk and banana – you can blend the two together, if you prefer. Use skim milk for best results. If you experience any food cravings on day # 4, eat a banana or blend it with a glass of skim milk and ice in a blender for a milkshake. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Blending 2 bananas and 2 glasses of skim milk with ice makes a smoothie that you can pour into a thermos to take with you to work or when you are on the go.
When it comes to making the soup, use a large stockpot and add a cup each of your favorite vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, celery, onions and peppers. You can season the soup with Himalayan Pink Sea Salt and pepper. Himalayan Pink Sea Salt will not elevate blood pressure and is loaded with a balance of minerals.
Preparing For Day # 5
Congratulations on making it to day # 5. The past four days of the GM diet lacked protein and you may have noticed some muscle weakness, however on day # 5, you are only allowed to eat beef and tomatoes. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you can substitute the beef for brown rice or tofu. Not a fan of beef? You can substitute chicken or 6 eggs for the beef. However, beef contain protein and iron, and the tomatoes contain lycopene and plenty of fiber that your body needs.
It is a good idea to eat small servings of beef throughout your day as large servings can make your appetite worse. Of course, combine the beef with the tomatoes at each meal on day # 5. For example, you can start your day with tomato soup and braised beef that will provide protein, fiber and energy for your day.
A hamburger with tomato only will work for lunch but drink plenty of water to flush out the uric acid your body will produce from all the beef. Enjoy beef soup and tomatoes with plenty of water when it is time for a snack. No fruit juices allowed. If you do not like red meat, you can make a turkey burger or use chicken instead of the beef. Make sure it is skinless chicken breast and use all-white turkey meat for making the turkey hamburgers.
(You can substitute the beef for any meat or plant based protein)
Zest of one lemon
1 cup of beef tenderloin strips
1 teaspoon of ground coriander
Himalayan Pink Sea salt and pepper to taste
Season the meat, chicken or turkey meat with the lemon zest by rubbing it all over the meat. Let stand for at least 10 minutes. Season with coriander, sea salt and pepper to taste – place on grill or griddle and cook at least 4-5 minutes on each side, depending on thickness. Remove and serve with sliced tomatoes.
Day # 5 Sample Meal Plan
Breakfast: braised beef and sliced tomatoes
Mid-Morning: turkey patty and tomato
Lunch: Hamburger patty and sliced tomato
Mid-Afternoon: turkey patty and tomato
Dinner: hamburger patty and tomato
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out the uric acid your body will produce with all the meat consumed. No fruit juices. You should notice a difference in how much lighter you feel due to the first three days of cleansing and detoxification. Your skin should be glowing by now from eating all those fruits and vegetables.
Prepare For Day # 6
Protein and fiber is the name of the game on day # 6. It is considered a feast day because you can now add vegetables to your protein choices on this day. By this day, you should notice significant weight loss and a different in how you feel. Make note of how you feel before, during and after exercise.

Breakfast: Bowl of vegetable soup with lean beef strips
Mid-Morning: leafy green salad with cooked lean beef or chicken strips on top
