What to Eat After Taking the Cabbage Soup Diet
After following a diet that consists of little more than homemade cabbage soup for a full week, you may feel exhausted, grumpy and ravenous. Since you’ve been neglecting your recommended daily intake of several essential nutrients while on the cabbage soup diet, a smart first priority is to ease back into a balanced, complete eating plan.

The cabbage soup diet does not provide balanced nutrition. Although MayoClinic.com recommends that you get about 55 percent of your daily calories from carbohydrates, 25 percent from fat and 20 percent from protein, cabbage soup provides very little fat or protein and is short on the vitamins and minerals that you’d get from whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Thus, it’s important to get enough of those nutrients in the period immediately following the diet.
The cabbage soup diet “should be followed by at least two weeks of a normal, balanced diet to ensure proper nutrition,” states Katherine Zeratsky, registered dietitian and nutritionist for MayoClinic.com. That means daily servings of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, lean proteins and whole grains. At each meal, ChooseMyPlate.gov recommends achieving balance by making at least half of your foods fruits or vegetables, a quarter of your plate protein-rich foods and a quarter of your plate a grain, preferably a whole grain.

On the morning after you end the cabbage soup diet, try a breakfast of whole-wheat toast and an egg-white omelet made with three egg whites, some fresh spinach and about a tablespoon of grated cheese. For lunch, have a whole-grain wrap with lean turkey or tofu and mustard, lettuce and tomatoes. Serve your wrap with coleslaw or a scoop of low-fat cottage cheese and fresh fruit. At dinner, make a whole-wheat pizza crust and top it with a small amount of part-skim mozzarella, low-sodium tomato sauce, lean ground turkey and a variety of healthy veggies.
In the days following the cabbage soup diet, you may be tempted to reach for sweets or other high-calorie indulgences. This can set back any weight loss progress you achieved on the diet, however, and rich foods will not meet your body’s nutritional needs. Instead of giving in to cravings, make a balanced and low-calorie eating plan a high priority. How to Follow the Cabbage Soup Diet to Lose Weight Superfast?
The Cabbage soup diet is an extreme weight loss diet that is designed for overweight individuals.
It helps in losing up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of weight in a week without adding any extra efforts like exercising to your daily routine. In this diet regime, you’re required to consume a low-calorie cabbage soup multiple times a day for 7 days along with a list of suggested foods.
In general, most of the diet programs to lose weight may take some time to show results. Only in some low carb diets like the GM diet, the results may be seen quickly (in a week or so). Unlike the other fad diets which emphasizes on extreme limiting of food intake, the GM diet plan says otherwise. You’re not required to go on a hunger strike to lose weight. You can eat as much as you want, but with an exception that the foods you consume should be the list of suggested foods for that particular day.
Example: If it is day 1 of the diet plan, then you can eat unlimited quantities of fruits (excluding banana) along with the cabbage soup. But, you should not include other varieties of foods like vegetables, milk, chicken, etc.… on the first day. Likewise, separate rules should be followed each day depending on the program.

- Since the soup is high in fiber and low in calories, it is generally prescribed to obese patients. There are around 20 calories for every 100 grams of the soup, but provides more than 53% of the DA of C vitamin (recommended dietary allowance) every day. The fruits on days 1, 3 and 7 provide vitamins A, C and E. The tomatoes are rich in antioxidant, lycopene. The potatoes and mushrooms are rich in B-complex vitamins. The meat on days 5 and 6 is a rich source of iron and vitamin D. The skimmed milk on day 4 is high in calcium and potassium can be found in bananas.
- The cabbage soup is not prepared using cabbage alone and you’ll also need to add other healthy ingredients such as carrots, tomatoes, celery, green onions, mushrooms, green pepper & leafy vegetables etc… Adding a variety of ingredients not only enhances the taste but also improves the nutritional values of the soup.
- The recipe of the soup is very simple and can be prepared in just 15 minutes (see below for recipe).
- This soup can also be consumed every day, even while you’re not following the diet. I prefer replacing my dinner (last meal of the day) with the nutritious cabbage soup, so that I don’t have to sleep bloated with unhealthy foods.
- Since there is no restriction on the quantity of soup and recommended foods, you’re less likely to be suffered with hunger pains.
- You can give this GM Motors diet a try as it will help you lose about 10 pounds in just 1 week. So, it might be beneficial in kick-starting your weight reduction and also sets a path in transforming to a healthy lifestyle (eating habits).

7 Day Cabbage Soup Diet Eating Plan
As I said earlier, you’re allowed to eat selected foods along with the cabbage soup every day. So, don’t try to skip your meals for losing weight as this is the best diet plan to lose 10lbs in a week without going on a hunger strike. Eat to your heart’s content and lose weight effortlessly.
Day 1: You’re allowed to eat all varieties of fruits (except banana) along with cabbage soup and water.
Day 2: Today, you should be eating only vegetables with an exception of Potato for just breakfast. Do not eat fruit today and only drink the soup and enough water. Remember that you can have the vegetable either in raw or cooked form (your choice).
Day 3: Mix of fruits and vegetables. No banana or potato on this day. Soup and water can be consumed.
Day 4: Skimmed milk and bananas. You can eat as many as 6 large or 8 small bananas and 750 ml of skimmed milk per day. When you’re hungry, do have the soup and water.
Day 5: Beef or Chicken or Brown rice and 6 tomatoes. You should drink more water today in order to flush away the uric acid from your body. You can have the meat in soup or grilled form. Have soup at least once this day.
Day 6: It is same as the day 5, but replace tomatoes with vegetables (no potato). The rest of the rules are same.
Day 7: Brown rice, fruits and vegetables. You can prepare brown rice with sprouts & veggies for better taste. Drink 2 glasses of fruit juice per day and have soup at least once.
P.S: You should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day as it will help in flushing out harmful impurities from your body, thereby helping you lose more weight.
Day 8 and Beyond: The cabbage soup diet should not be followed for more than 7 days at a stretch. Since, this is a low-fat, high fiber diet, it is advised to repeat this diet only after a gap of 1 week for better weight loss results. Meanwhile, you can follow the 1500 calorie meal plan in order to maintain your lost weight.
Cabbage Soup Recipe: How to Prepare?
Like I said before, preparing the cabbage soup is pretty easy and takes just 15 minutes to serve.
- Cabbage: 1/4 slice; chopped into small pieces
- Onions: 1/2
- Celery: 1 rib
- Carrot: 1/2 sliced
- Tomatoes: 2 small or 1 large
- Garlic cloves: 2; thinly sliced
- Mushrooms: 2 (sliced); optional
- Beans: 3 or 4
- Coriander leaves: As you like them
- Olive oil: 1 teaspoon
- Rock salt and Black pepper: For taste
- Water: As required
Cabbage Soup Preparation
- Take a pressure cooker and heat the Olive oil.
- Now, add the garlic cloves, onions and fry them until they turn golden brown. Follow with the rest of the ingredients (no particular order).
- Once you’re done with frying, pour enough water so that all the vegetables are immersed properly.
- Now, add some salt for taste.
- Put the lid on and wait for 3 to 4 whistles.
- Leave it for few minutes until the pressure is completely gone. Take the lid out, pour the soup into a bowl, add some pepper and lemon juice for taste and serve hot.
You can also add some sprouts to enhance the taste of the soup, but don’t go overboard as they contain calories.

So let's take a closer look at some of the reasons why the cabbage soup diet seems to work so incredibly fast.
How does the cabbage soup diet work (and why it works so well)?
The cabbage soup diet is a low-sodium diet, meaning you could lose a lot of sodium-bound water weight, especially if you're currently eating a high-sodium diet.

The cabbage soup diet is based on an awesome idea of using low calorie foods to provide a good feeling of fullness and satisfaction while still keeping your calorie intake extremely low.
But because you will eat so little calories, you'll also end up losing a lot of water weight that's currently bound to something called "glycogen".
Glycogen is simply how our bodies store energy, and as soon as you go on some low-calorie diet, your body will start wiping out those glycogen energy reserves.
But just because you'll be losing a lot of glycogen-bound or sodium-bound water weight, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll actually be losing any of that stubborn body fat.
How much body fat will you lose on the cabbage soup diet?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you won't be losing any body fat on the cabbage soup diet.
I'm just saying you'll probably lose way less body fat than what the number on your bathroom scale might suggest.
While your final fat loss results will depend on how much soup you actually eat, you will probably end up eating anywhere between 500-1000 calories per day.
At that many calories per day, you can consider yourself lucky if you managed to lose 3 pounds of pure body fat per week. A more realistic number would be up to 2 pounds of body fat per week.
Let's take a look at some of the benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss.
The major benefits of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss
The single biggest benefit of the cabbage soup diet is the fact that there's no set limit on how much cabbage soup you're actually allowed to eat.
Like I said, this happens because the ingredients for the soup are all so extremely low in calories, meaning that you can literally stuff your face with cabbage soup all day and still lose weight.
Naturally, this solves one of the biggest issue of most weight loss diets that tell you to limit your portion sizes to ridiculously small amounts.
Another major benefit of the cabbage soup diet is that not only are the ingredients low in calories, they're also low in price. Forget expensive powders, pills, and supplements, and get used to natural, healthy, and inexpensive foods.
But even the cabbage soup diet isn't without flaws.
The major problems of doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss
The single biggest problem you'll run into when doing the cabbage soup diet for weight loss is that it can get boring pretty fast.
Of course, this isn't just a problem when it comes to the cabbage soup diet. Lack of variety is easily one of the biggest reasons why people fall off the weight loss bandwagon in the first place.
Another problem worth mentioning is that the cabbage soup diet doesn't offer a "complete nutritional profile". In other words, it doesn't cover all of your daily needs for vitamins, minerals, protein, etc.
Again, this isn't just a problem of the cabbage soup diet, but pretty much any weight loss diet in existence. This is also why people are advised to stick to the cabbage soup diet for only 7 days at a time, and told not to go on the diet again before spending at least 2 weeks on a normal diet.
How to improve the cabbage soup diet?
The cabbage soup diet will deliver pretty awesome weight loss results on its own.
But let me show you some science on how it's possible to boost your calorie burn rate even further.
Before we get to that, let's take a look at what you can do to deal with easily the single biggest drawback of the cabbage soup diet.
Do this to make the cabbage soup diet feel less restrictive
The simplest way of keeping all the benefits of the cabbage soup diet, but make it a little less restrictive, is to find.
Recipes that rely on extremely low-calorie ingredients, just like the cabbage soup diet does.
