As the saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." At least that's what the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says about fad diets, which is what you would call the Progresso Soup Diet. Like other soup diets, the idea behind the Progresso version is that you replace your usual meals with the soup to help you lose weight. While you might lose weight following the diet, you may have a hard time keeping it off.

Progresso Diet Details

The Progresso Soup diet started as a contest created by Progresso to show that the soup could help you lose weight. The diet requires that you replace two to three of your regular meals with a can of soup. The diet does not specify which line of soups to eat. But Progresso does sell a line of light soups that contain 60 to 100 calories per serving. This diet is not meant for long-term use, according to the Progresso Soup Diet website.

How It Helps You Lose

By replacing most of your meals with a low-calorie soup, the Progresso Soup Diet helps you lose weight by restricting calories. In essence, if you replace two out of your three meals with a light soup, and eat a sensible dinner that contains 400 to 600 calories, you may be limiting your overall calorie intake to 640 to 1,000 calories a day. Limiting your intake to this extreme should only be done under the watchful eye of a doctor. Additionally, when you restrict calories to lose weight quickly, you are more than likely losing muscle and water, not fat.

Smarter Ways to Lose With Soup

Hunger can be a major setback for anyone trying to lose weight. One way to combat hunger is by filling your diet with low-energy-dense foods, which are foods that have few calories compared to their portion size. Broth-based soup is considered a low-energy-dense food. Eating a bowl of broth-based soup, such as one of the Progresso light soups, before a meal may help fill you up so you eat less of your main meal. Be aware that while soup can make a healthy addition to your diet, it is source of sodium. Read labels and track your intake to help keep your sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams a day.

Stop the Yo-Yo

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, it's better to lose it slowly at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week following a diet that incorporates healthy lifestyle changes. That means eating a variety of foods from all the food groups so that you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy. To help keep portions, and calories, in check use smaller plates, bowls and cups. Don't skip meals, especially breakfast.

Can You Lose Weight Eating Nothing But Progresso Soup?

Anyone who knows me understands my attraction for Progresso soup. Eating a can of this per day last year helped me curb my eating habits and avoid fast-food and other questionable materials. However, there is a dark side to the can-of-wonder. It could be harmful if you eat nothing but Progresso soups day in and day out – unless you closely monitor your intake. Let me show you what I mean.

Health Benefits Galore for Progresso Soup

Even though it’s more expensive per can as opposed to Chef Boyardee, Progresso soups do have a significant amount of health benefits. For starters, it’s usually half of the calorie intake as those other canned pastas.

This breaks my heart a bit because I love Chef Boyardee. But, the health benefits just aren’t there unless I eat a single serving from the can of something like Ravioli. However, a half can of Chef Boyardee is often the calories equivalent as a whole can of Progresso with fewer vitamins.

Calorie Count

Progresso often has fewer calories than many competitors. Thanks to a blend of herbs and seasonings, the company manages to make virtually anything taste good – at least in my opinion. For example, an entire can of Creamy Tomato with Penne is only 170 per serving.

When you take into consideration the noodles and “creamy” parts are what increase the calorie load, 340 for the entire can isn’t all that bad. This is one of the more rich soups I eat. Others such as Traditional Chicken Noodle have as little as 100 per serving, or 200 per can.

You can also pick up the “light” versions of the Progresso soup, which usually has half the calories. These aren’t too bad in terms of taste, but they are mostly water in many cases.

Vitamins and Minerals

While it depends on which can you eat, Progresso can contribute a great deal to your overall health in terms of vitamins and minerals. Most flavors are pretty decent about including things that boost vitamin A, calcium and iron.

The Traditional Beef and Vegetable soup provides a decent serving of proteins as well as iron. As long as you’re not adverse to vegetables, you can get quite a bit of what you need with every lunch.

Many styles of Progresso soup provide a low-fat diet. With the exception of things such as the Creamy Tomato with Penne and other pastas, the fat content of these soups is relatively low. Again, this all depends on the flavors you choose to eat.

I have an affinity for pastas and tomatoes, so I tend to eat more fats and calories than what the other flavors have.

The Dark Side of Progresso Soup

Progresso soups do have a dark side. Although there is an abundance of health benefits, there is also an abundance of sodium. Many of the cans have more than 600mg per serving. Now, this doesn’t sound all that bad considering that people should consume less than 2500mg per day. If I eat the whole can of Creamy Tomato with Penne soup, I will raise my daily level by 1380mg in a single meal!

That doesn’t include breakfast, dinner or any snacks I might want throughout the day. Keep in mind that salt is not the only thing that can increase your sodium level.

What Does Sodium Do to You?

Sodium is one of those components you need but can be dangerous in excess. By holding onto the water you consume, it helps regulate the volume of blood in your body. This is why too much sodium can be bad. More blood equals greater pressure. Greater pressure can feed into heart disease and other cardiovascular problems.

Sodium levels can play a role in hyper-tension as well.

There are several ways you can reduce the sodium use within the body without medications. The easiest is to closely monitor what you eat. This isn’t some “old people” problem as high-blood pressure has been discovered in obese children and poorly nourished teenagers.

Using Progresso to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle

I was able to lose weight eating Progresso soup because of how I approached my eating habits. Yes, I did consume a large amount of sodium during lunch. However, that was offset by eating logical breakfasts and dinners.

For example, the sodium content of a properly prepared chicken salad with spinach has a considerable less amount of sodium content than one of my favorite brands of soup.

Another aspect to eating soup to lose weight is the amount of time it stays in the system. Foods that are more based in water content take less time to digest and are quicker to absorb. It also means it will help keep your bowel movements regulated.

It is possible to lose weight and remain healthy by eating Progresso soup at lunch and dinner. However, you’ll need to pay close attention to what you consume the rest of the day. Here are some of the ways I balanced out my intake when I was losing 15 pounds per month:

  • Balanced the sodium intake by eating more salads
  • Bought a few Progresso “Low sodium” brands of soup
  • Bought some Progresso “Light” brands of soup – although they’re mostly water, but still tasty
  • Added more fruits throughout the day to fill me up
  • Drank more water to fill me up

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Progresso soups are bad by any means. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. As long as you can maintain your sodium levels, these can be one of those perfect lunchtime meals. Just remember to mix up your day with more foods that are lower in sodium.

Losing Weight with Progresso

I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight simply by altering my eating habits and sticking to logical portion sizes. Eating a single can of Progresso helped me steer clear of the incredible amount of calories and fats I was consuming from places like Taco Bell.

If you’re going to focus on a Progresso diet, just makes sure you watch yourself the rest of the day. It doesn’t do any good to eat a can of Beef Barley for lunch only to finish off a package of cupcakes for dinner.

Does the Progresso Soup Diet Really Work?

The idea behind the Progresso Soup Diet is to lose weight while the primary mainstay is the product. Because Progresso has so many flavors and types available, it’s easy to maintain and not feel bored with eating the same thing day-in and day-out. That is, unless you get tired of soup. But does this plan really work for losing weight?

Losing Weight with the Progresso Soup Diet

I stumbled across the Progresso Soup Diet purely by accident. At first, I only bought the product because I am a fan of the brand. I love the wide selection and found it more healthy and fulfilling than Chef Boyardee.

Essentially, I made it a primary staple throughout the week because it was easy to make. Little did I know it would be responsible for helping me shed the first 20 pounds within two months.

So, does the Progresso Soup Diet really work? From my perspective, I would have to say, “Yes.”

However, that isn’t saying that it will work for everyone. Because we all have a different physiology, what works for me may not work for you. All I can really do is share my experiences and let you judge for yourself.

How I Made the Soup Diet Work

It’s relatively easy to make a soup diet work, as long as you’re paying attention to the rest of your day. You’re not going to get everything you need from any one meal.

A soup diet has great potential to work, especially given its higher water content. Water helps digest foods quicker, which means they move through your system faster. This could be both good and bad, depending on your individual circumstance.

With that being said, here’s how I made the Progresso Soup Diet work for me.

Addressing Sodium intake

While I do love Progresso Soup, it does contain a large amount of sodium. Luckily, you can buy the “low sodium” version of the brand. Unfortunately, it’s mostly water compared to its original counterpart and may turn you off if you want something with more bulk.

To offset the sodium intake, I would drink more water while eating things with less sodium content throughout the day.

In reality, I don’t have much of a problem with sodium. In fact, I have a problem with low blood pressure regardless of eating a lot of salty foods. It’ll probably catch up with me sooner or later, but for now I don’t really have problems adapting to the sodium content in soup.

How Often Do I Eat Progresso?

When I lost the most weight, I was eating soup for lunch and most dinners. There were times when I would mix it up a bit and have something different throughout the day. But for the most part, it was soup.

Because of situations in my life, my consistency with eating soup has been a bit haphazard. Between moving, being without a car and trying to get on my feet, it’s been difficult to stay the course.

Currently, I am planning to have a can for lunch and a Lean Cuisine for dinner every day this week.

In the past, my daily meals looked kind of like this:

  • Breakfast: Instant Cream of Wheat with mixed berries
  • Lunch: Progresso Soup – flavor varied from day-to-day
  • Dinner: More soup

I also mixed in multivitamins and various dairy products for calcium and other nutrients.

Like I said, though, I did have various other foods for dinner once in a while. For instance, I would walk extra steps on days I wanted pizza. I found a good balance and lost a lot of weight in the meantime.

Using MyFitnesspal

I am a big fan of MyFitnessPal. It’s a great app for those who want to watch their caloric intake.

Every day, I will record my eating habits and adjust the day to keep calories within a certain goal. Most Progresso Soups are incredibly light compared to other foods you can eat. This makes them great for calorie watchers.

This was one of the major reasons why I stuck with the brand for so long. Instead of a 400+ calorie can of pasta, I can satisfy myself with something like a 220 calorie can of Chicken and Wild Rice.

Keeping calories green in MyFitnessPal is the key to my ability to lose weight on this soup diet. If I need extra calories for something I want to eat later, I simply add in some kind of physical activity.

This process is what has driven my to lose 60 pounds so far with 50 to go.

Why the Progresso Soup Diet?

To be honest, I really didn’t put much thought into why I chose this brand instead of others. I’ve always had an affinity for Progresso Soup and simply like the brand with all of its flavors.

I’ve seen many similar types of diets spotted throughout the Internet. I suppose any one of them could work in a similar fashion. It all boils down to maintaining health and monitoring your intake.

Would I Consider Other Types of Soup?

As long as the soup diet fit my personal criteria, I wouldn’t mind trying some other brands. In fact, I do like some of Campbell’s soups as they offer a few flavors aside from what Progresso has.

In reality, it’s all up to the individual and whether you can sustain healthy eating. And like any product on the market, it is possible to gain weight if you gorge yourself on nothing but soup.

Why Eat a Variety of Soups?

One of the reasons I like variety in flavor is because each provides a different level of nutrition and vitamins. Some will have a higher protein content while others have more vitamin A. It’s all about creating balance of what the body needs throughout the week.

You need to also consider eating the same meals over and over. It’s easy to get bored with one type of food, unless you really love it. For example, one of my most common breakfasts is eggs and sausage. However, I’ll eat oatmeal and Cream of Wheat just to mix it up a bit.

What About the High Sodium Content?

Obviously, those who cannot have higher levels of sodium may want to choose alternative foods. A whole can of Progresso Soup can range around the 1600mg mark. Actually, a single serving should be all that you need. But not everyone can just eat half a can of soup.

Unfortunately, I can’t find a very wide selection of low-sodium Progresso. However, I do sometimes add the ones available simply because they are incredibly low in calories.

Can You Lose Weight Eating Progresso Soup?

A soup diet isn’t as bad as some might think. I’ve lost a lot of weight thanks partially to Progresso. But in the end, it’s the person on the diet who makes the decision to eat better. Just keep in mind even though I lost weight, it doesn’t guarantee you will.
